There has been some discussion of showing folks the different brewing software packages available out there. If you bring your laptop and a long VGA cord we can hook it up to the projector to show folks who are interested.

Also, if anyone that attended the NHC wants to hook up their laptop with a slide show of what we missed to play during the meeting, we can do that too. See you folks on Thursday.

June Meeting

I can bring my laptop with Brew Smith 2.0, although I haven't had any time to look at it yet.
We talked to Brad Smith at NHC and he said he might be willing to give the club a copy to give away as a door prize. I'll try to follow up with him on that.

June Meeting

Post by carrisr »

Matt,
We had planned to do a BeerSmith 2.0 demo for the July Tech meeting. If you'd be willing to host that too so we could use your projector that would be awesome. The tenative date would be Wednesday, July 6th. However, we've not exactly had a regular night for it so if there's a better one we can move it. The crowd for the tech meetings is usually around 10 people and much less "boisterous".

I could host the tech meeting for that matter.  My projector is probably a little better suited to looking at software.

I just used beersmith 2.0 yesterday. I think once I get used to it it will be a nice upgrade, but for not I'm in the "Where is that feature?" mode. I was planning to attend the tech meeting where we compared software, I have a couple companion apps on my phone that I find pretty useful.

The reason for trying to shoot for this at a tech meeting is contrast and compare the different software at one time in one place. The problem with just demoing one peice of software at the meeting is:

1) lack of attention by people, the non tech monthly meeting is loud and people lose interest quickly because those not interested are sitting there drinking.

2) Lack of available time to go over all the different software packages that are available.

I was really shooting for a meeting that we could compare and contrast the different packages not just highlight one. How can you tell if BeerSmith is the package for you as a new brewer or even old for that matter if you have not seen what else is on the market.

We all have the software that we use and for a variety of reasons. Me for example, one of the primary reason I use the package that I do is because it offers the features that I need on a mobile environment. I like haveing it on my phone so I have my recipes and session with me at all times and my inventory. I can do notes right in my brew room.

Others have different requirements. Customization to their environment, session recording, inventory, recipe builders, batch ordering, etc... So I want to provide discriptive compare/contrast documentation to help people choose the right software for them, not to boast and try to convert those to the software package that I use. So let's take a little time with this and see how many packages we can pull together and try to provide the club members with a good medium to decide what is right for them.

Yeah, wouldn't be a very productive session at the meeting. We are better served with Strange Brew or Beerfest playing in the background.

I am out for July, so that would be good if Jim can host that tech session.

Couple questions. Do we bring the smoked beer for club comp to this meeting? How many bottles do we need and how do I label them? Also Travis, can I get a Beer Nuts patch and club t-shirt? Let me know how much and I'll pay you at the meeting.

Yes, they come to the June meeting. Bring 2 bottles. Label with your name, and with this category, I think you need to list your base beer. Travis could answer that better than me. So if it is a smoked pilsner, label it smoked pilsner.

Yes, please bring your entries to the next meeting, if you can’t make it to drop off your entry, please try and send it with someone else or contact me to make other arrangements.

Please bring 2 12oz bottles or one 22oz is fine too. You will need to label them both with something that can be easily removed, (label held on with rubber band) works best. I was going to send you to the link to the bjcp labels, but I can’t seem to get to the site, might be down today.

Also since this is an “other” smoked beer, a base beer must be noted, but it doesn’t have to be an exact style if one was not intended. So you could say Porter, or brown ale. Its not required but helpful if you also note the source of smoke so the judges have an idea of what you were shooting for in the smoke flavor.

As a reminder, your first club patch is free for current members, and shirts are 10 for members, $15 for non.
