The only kingsford that contains petroleum us the match light stuff. The regular kingsford briquettes are hardwood charcoal and paraffin binders. The paraffin is why you get more ash. Lump charcoal will burn hotter, and faster. But I am not looking for hotter and faster when doing BBQ. In fact, that is why I like Kingsford so much. You know exactly how it is going the burn. I just find lump to be too unpredictable.
For what it's worth, I have beaten many of you, in competition, with kingsford charcoal. And I intend to do it again on Aug 4th.
If I want to cook over burning wood, I start a campfire.

Oh, I'm sensing a total glove slap going on here! Screw all the lump vs briquette arguments, my pellet pooper rocks! How many of you have a wireless remote for your temp control? I do baby!
BTW, when are we going to close the polling on the comp?

Sams has 20 lb bags of natural mesquite lump charcoal for under $9 (usually). There are some larger pieces in the bag that I keep around for the extra long and overnight cooks, but overall a great value.

Maybe I just had a bad bag, but that's the stuff I swore I'd never use again.

Just like with homebrewing, it's what's in the bottle that counts, not how it got there! Same with Q - if what's on the plate is tasty, don't matter how it got there! I've enjoyed plenty of Tim's Q and if Kingsford works for him - Hallelujah! But - game on for Aug 4th!
I will bringing some bags of Wicked Good briquettes back from the HawgEyes run, as they are the only ones I'll use. They use a starch binder that doesn't create the creosote that Jim was referring to and produce less ash, too. I use them mostly in the baby grill (Grill Dome). If anyone would like to try some, I'll be more than happy to share. Same goes for the extruded coconut shell charcoal.

I stopped at The Grill Works in Marion today to get pellets and saw that they are now carrying Wicked Good lump charcoal.
