If you need more help, I can either judge or steward.

We're up to 6 judges. My thought is to do 2 flights of 3 beers to make it go faster so your help would be great tony plus another... although I could have them numbered beforehand to eliminate the need for a steward.

Probably a good idea. If I tried to judge all 6 Breakfast stouts, I would likely be into palate fatigue by the last couple.

Does this mean each judge would only taste half the beers? Wasn't that the one of the main problems with the New Bo homebrew comp last summer?

Seems like each judge should try all 6. I don't think 6 is too many. I would judge but I entered.

Seven entries isn't too bad. I recall the Furious comp had 13 or so.
Also, the issue with the NewBo deal was that the judges just were poor judges for the most part. Lack of detail on the scoresheets etc. I didn't recall there being a process issue.

I don't recall who, but I think one of the judges indicated they were broken into two or three groups, with each group only tasting 1/2 or 1/3 of the beers. After that, they just tallied up all the scores and awarded without calibration within the group and without a BOS round where each group could taste the highest rated beers. Regardless of whether or not that happened at New Bo, I think it's probably not a great idea to follow that structure here.

With 6 entries [Chris I included yours in the first number] it doesn't save too much tasting to do 2-flights, as the only way to do it properly is a mini BOS to declare the winner. My initial thought was that judges would only need to judge 3 samples, and then have a judges meeting afterwards where the best samples are decided and scores are calibrated.
It does not matter to me which way we go... just thinking that my pallet does not quite have the stamina to last more than 5-7 samples [remember we need to taste the real thing, too, which reminds me that I need to find some...]

While palate fatigue could be a factor, it's also a matter of time management to judge 6 beers. It might be manageable if we dispense with the usual scoring sheets/method (using the BJCP guidelines) and just concentrate on the side-by-side judging. A straight up or down call on if it's Breakfast Stout and not an analytic breakdown of the beer in all the relevant categories (color, aroma, taste, mouth-feel, etc.). Does it give the same overall impression of Breakfast Stout? On a 1 to 10 scale - 1 being it's a brown ale and a 10 being a spot-on clone.
