For non-BIAB systems I disagree with the assertion that tearing of husks isn't significant. Tearing of the husks from plate mills like the Corona leads to fine husk particulate in the runoff. Clarification is much reduced and some of these fines end up in the kettle. Since the husks contain tannins which are extracted at boil there is a definite effect on flavor.
My experience is consistent: when I got my roller mill I could get clear runoff much sooner and there was a marked reduction in astringency.
For BIAB, I have no experience. But, I suspect the filter bag helps reduce the husk fines.

When I used a corona it wasn't too bad (for small batches). I was able to put a cordless drill on it to crank through it fast. But I was also happy to move to a roller mill when I got the chance. If anyone wants a corona, I still have it. Free.

Well, I ordered this guy today. So I should be setup and ready to go when the grain comes in.andrewmaixner wrote:I ended up getting a Monster Mill 2 used for the price of a BarleyCrusher. I found that my tiny 12v battery drill would (just barely) drive the Barely Crusher I was borrowing, but for the MonsterMill2, it would choke, so I picked up one of the the aforementioned harbor freight drills (note they don't call it "high-torque low-speed" as they used to): http://www.harborfreight.com/1-2-half-i ... 93632.html

I run my Corona with a hammer drill. (An old Black and Decker, probably like that Harbor Freight one) It is fast enough. OK on having the husks tool up a grain bed. I would not know since I have always used a curtain panel or a bag.
