It a temperature issue, not a physical damage issue (though that is important also, of course.)
A CO2 bottle could activate it's emergency pressure release, and dump the entire contents of the tank, at "normal hot summer" temperatures. Best case is you lose all your CO2. Worst case is someone dies.

We don't have anywhere else to store it. Once again if anyone has suggestions feel free to volunteer to do the work!

Brainstorm:
I wonder if the triangular trailer frame area in the front, where it attaches to the vehicle, could have a wire "shelf" assembly attached, to hold CO2?

I was thinking that a simple shelf with a few bits of vertical frame to which the bottles could be attached with cargo straps would be effective, simple and flexible. I'd volunteer to make it, but such fabrication requires welding skills which I don't have. I'd love to learn them though.

The issue is with heat buildup in closed air spaces. The trailer has some fairly good venilation through the roof if I remember correctly

Also it's been stored in the trailer for the past 2 years. It may happen but it has not happened yet.

Aah, good to know. Probably not something that we need to worry about then (especially since no one will be riding in the trailer with it)

We can also let the vendor who fills them (Hawkeye) know that they will be stored in a place where the temperature can exceed 100F. They should have the Ideal Gas Law curves so they can reduce the mass of the CO2 loaded into the vessel, such that expected high temp produces an internal pressure below the safety valve protection rating.

Good thinking. But, unfortunately bottled CO2 doesn't obey the Ideal Gas Law because, well..., it isn't a gas. It's actually held in liquid state by the pressure. Thus, while there is even a little liquid in the bottle, the pressure is almost purely a function of the temperature and not the amount of CO2 in the bottle. And the pressure rises rapidly even with a small increase in temperature. A bottle at room temperature is about 750 psi, but a bottle at 100 degrees F is nearly 1500 psi. That's why it is so critical that the bottle not be allowed to get warmer than 90 degrees F or there about.

This wasn't an issue at any point last year. I think the risk is low. I'd be concerned if we didn't have any airflow (such as a closed car), but our situation is not much different than ambient.
Where do they store co2 containers in a temp controlled warehouse? ... not likely

For what it's worth it is regulation that compressed and liquified gasses are restrained in place.... occasionally they may go boom, but this is always a risk (and why they need to be recertified).

Honestly, I am not really worried about it. Keep it fastened to something in the trailer so it doesn't fall over and I will haul it around. Trailer is ventilated, should be fine. If not, it is in the trailer.

I agree that it is not likely to be dangerous as no one rides inside the trailer. But, we might be surprised by an empty bottle sometime.
