Iowa Vote on Iowa Brewery Equality Bill (SF2091)

Post by Lower Case T »

Not sure about this one. This could be from last year.   Senator Black has now said he'd like to cap it at 10 % ABW.  We're working on a "form letter" to send to the representatives to try and get back some of this ABW.  it went from 20 to 17 last year.  then this year it went from 12 to 10.  the senate seems to have OK'd 12 but the house wants 10.  thats the word on the street anyway.

But I hope this info is absolutely correct.

Iowa Beer Equality Bill Supporters:

Representative Mark Smith (D-District #43) has offered an amendment H 8084 to SF 2088 that would end up striking the provisions for high alcohol beer. It will be debated this afternoon - 5:30 p.m. in the House.
You need to call or e-mail your House member and ask them to oppose the Smith Amendment -- this is a free/open vote in the Democratic Caucus which means they will not be persuaded how to vote.
Representative Smith is concerned about increased consumption and substance abuse.

Calls or emails should be made to ALL House members! House switchboard - 515.281.3221 or find e-mail addresses at http://www3.legis.state.ia.us/ga/legisl ... ch=h&ga=83

Yes!  Please send emails.

One main point to focus on is the fact that these beers are already in our market!  You can buy high proof beer at HyVee.  .  This bill simply levels the playing field to allow Iowa Brewers to produce beers that we are forced to compete against but can't produce.

Other main points:

Really?  Come on now.  Some freaking teenager or drunk is gonna buy a $10 bottle of RIS when there is a $ 15 dollar case of bud light or a $10 gallon of vodka right next to it?  Not to mention the fact that their sensitive taste buds wouldn't allow something that delicious past their lips anyway.

Or something like that.

If anyone would like I could forward you the letter that I sent.  It would need to be eddited to fit your email, but might be a start.

Same with me, but none of the others have replied. Hopefully they're getting hammered with opposition emails/calls.

I received email from Nick Wagner today. According to him Rep. Smith is likely to withdraw his amendment.
David,
Thanks for the email. It is my understanding that Rep. Smith will most likely withdraw his amendment and the limit for distribution and sale will be increased to 12%. I am planning on supporting this change.

Thanks,
Nick

If you didn't get the word, this amendment was not going to receive further consideration. So, in lay terms - it's dead! :D

Has there been any update on the bill? Any bill not voted on by Friday is dead. If nothing has happened we need to flood our representatives with e-mails again.

Last I heard was that the senate passed the bill on Thursday night. They passed a change to the beer section to make it effective immediately instead of waiting until July. So, I guess it's back in the House.

If this is still attached to bill 2088 then it has passed the house and is now on to the Governor for his sig! The description I got didn't have any of the ammendments.

SF 2088 did indeed pass the house and senate, and is on to the governor for signature. It does include the high alcohol beer provisions. And as this was sort of a pet bill for Culver, all indications are that it will be signed immediately. This will be a great time for brewers and beer enthusiast in Iowa.
