How do these Mid Country Malt prices compare to the ones we get from Millstream? Since so few seem to be interested in this group purchase it may not be worth it. Can someone check with Millstream and see when their next grain purchase is?

Mid Country has more selection. They are a middle man. When we order through Millstream, that comes direct from Briess so is much cheaper. Here is a list of items and prices from the last grain order. It varies with each order. The advantage to Mid Country is they have stuff other than Briess like imported malts.

Briess prior order (all items are 50lbs sacks of grain uness noted otherwise):

2-row $15.50
Bonlander Munich $22
Pale Ale Malt $20
Pilsner $26
White Wheat $16.50
Carapils $26
Red Wheat Flakes $16.50 (size unknown, Lee?)
Golden Light Dry Extract $62 (size unknown, Jeremy?)

On Tap:
American IPA
Strata Hazy IPA
Dr. Lee Orval
American Strong Ale
Friend of the Devil Belgian Golden Strong
Imperial Stout

If we are going to put in a grain order with Mid Country I would suggest two things:

1) only get what you think you will need to get through to the next Millstream order.

2) Get the items that you can not get through Millstream (ex/ Marris Otter).

speak of which I might be down for a couple of things. I really do like brewing certain things with Maris Otter, so I may be in for a sack of that.

Matt -- the Red Wheat Flakes came in a 25 pound bag.

Randy -- if you want some Carapils, I have about 22 lbs left of the bag I split with my brother-in-law. I will gladly sell you 10 lbs of it at whatever price Briess charged me.

Can we get anything Briess makes through Millstream or is it limited to the list above?

It would also be nice to know approx when their next Millstream order will be. I'm currently paying $2-2.50 per pound plus shipping for each of my grain orders so it's getting cost prohibitive. If I need to wait 6 months for the next Millstream order I'm going to go ahead and get what I want from Mid Country.

I think Tom has the catalog but if you get a pallet from Mid Country you will pay about 46 cents/lb for two row and 70 cents/lb for Marris Otter and about 65 cents/lb for crystal malts.  Depending on which malting company you get it from of course.

The delivery charge is a flat 80 dollar rate.  You get 40 bags of malt and they'll throw what ever hops, chemicals, minerals...etc.... on top of those bags.  It usually takes about three days to get the shipment.  I just ordered a pallet on Monday and it came this morning at 9:00.  But of course they'll deliver when ever you want.

Hope that helps.

Let's see if there is enough interest to fill a pallet. I stocked up this spring, but I wouldn't mind getting some non Briess malts.

I can get a drop shipment on a pallet easy enough. John wouldn't mind a couple beers for the effort though. More of a friendly gesture then payment.

The catalog can be downloaded here. http://www.northcountrymalt.com/pages.php?pageid=22 And I will bring it to the meeting.

The club would have to do the up front payment with COD to the members. We can talk about this at the meeting as well.

Tom,
As I said before, the catalog they have on the web site is really out of date. The attached I I put on here earlier is the 2010 one. The prices and product lines are slightly different. They have Gambrinus now for example.

You might want to check to make sure.  They've had Gambrinus for a while (2 or 3 years)  One of the newest companies they've added is Great Western.  Along with a bourbon barrel program and Canada Malting Superior Pale Ale Malt...and more.

Yes, I'm sure. The one online is dated 2008 and does not have Gambrinus or Great Western. The file I attached was sent by their sales rep direct to me today. He was surprised the files were out of date but we double checked them on the phone before he sent the new on to me.

OK.  well.  take a look at Tom's catalog. maybe its on there.  They've been selling Gambrinus since they started in 2006.  I've been buying Gambrinus malt from them since 2007.  Seems strange that they would leave that off the online catalog.  Maybe its a wholesale thing.

wait.   I are we talking about North Country (Mid Country) malt?  thats where I'm at.   Not that it matters.  I'm just trying to help.  I though you could get some pretty good deals through them.  I've gotten to know some of the higher ups there and they tell me they sell to a lot of home brew clubs.  Just thought it might save you some cash.  Don't forget about the chemicals, hops, and all the other things you can get through them for one flat rate of 80 bucks a pallet.

PS   I get no royalties here trust me.  just tryin to help out.

Travis,
Yeah it's Mid Country. They have a whole different catalog for home brewers, which is the one I've been talking about, and which is on the web page, but out of date. The catalog you buy from is the commercial catalog. The pricing is completely different. We can qualify for the tier 1 commercial pricing if we buy a full pallet worth. I would imagine that you are probably buying at at least the tier 2 commercial rates.
