Clone Competition
For those who didn't make it to the meeting: We're turning in the beers for the clone comp at the August meeting. Judging will take place soon after. For those not entering, please consider helping with the competition. I'm considering doing this on a weekend if it gets us more help. We'll work it out when we get closer.

A word of advice to anyone yet to dry hop their Furious clone. Do yourself a favor & bag the dry hops. I put 8+ oz of loose pellets into a secondary fermenter and, despite trying to avoid them while racking, still managed to get enough hop particles into my keg to plug it up pretty badly. 50 psi wouldn't even budge the sludge. I'll just pump it out in a couple of days, after the fining agents have run their course, but it's still an unnecessary step.

I have never used a hop bag in the traditional way and never plan too. I want my hops to have maxim contact with the beer. I have dry hopped with 6 oz. of pellets in a 5 gallon carboy before. I did not use any hop bags except I sanitized and tied one around the end of my racking cane. This acted as a filter for the hops and I was able to rack off the beer. It drains very slow though as hops collect around the tube and sack. I did pull the tube off the bottom and shake off some extras. The beer ended up great and was clear after setting in the keg for a week. Bob Cannon didn't seem to have any issues with it.

FWIW, I use hop bags in the keg, it give me a chance to sample the beer during dry hopping so I can get it to my liking, and much easier to remove than a carboy. I'm using a giant hop bag so contact really int a concern since the hops aren't crowded
Bad people drink bad beer. You don't usually see an empty bottle of Rochefort tossed onto the side of the road
Matt -- My thoughts were along the same line as yours, i.e. that a hop bag would limit extraction. This is the first time I've dry hopped with loose pellets and was very impressed with how intense the aroma was even though I only left it on the dry hops for 3 days. Obviously, I was much less impressed when the keg clogged....
I like your idea to put a filter bag around the racking cane and will keep that in mind for the next time I brew something with such a huge hop load. Did you use one of the super-fine-mesh hop bags or the kind that are closer to a paint strainer bag?

I usually dry hop with pellets. With pellets I have dropped my dry hopping to usually 5 days and no more than 7. I don't feel you get much after a week except grassy and vegetable flavors in my experience. I used a super-fine mesh bag since that is what I had. The other may work fine too. I also usually dry hop at whatever ambient temperature in my basement. Basically carboy on the counter in the brewery so the next beer can be in the fermenting fridge.
I have also thrown dry hops in a sack in the keg like Kent said. Works great, especially if you feel a beer doesn't have what you are looking for, its easy to add it in the keg. With the beer cold, it doesn't seem to get grassy and vegtable before I finish the keg.

Furious - Fresh and Cold From MN.
As mentioned at the July meeting, I'll be bringing some Surly Furious back this week if I could get a count on what you will all need? Looks like $2.50-3.00 per 16 oz can (Blue Max price) after tax and deposit - I'll try to shop around/negotiate a better deal if I can but don't have a lot of cooler space on this trip.
Also, just released this week, Surly's anniversary beer SYX. A 15% limited release beer bomb that is getting some great reviews... it should for nearly $20.00/24oz bottle. Let me know if your interested and I'll see what I can find. Blue is calling it 5+1 'because that's how many you get...1'.

Well, I'll definitely take a SYX if you can spare the space. As for Furious, you'll have no problem selling as much as you have room to bring back, but at least a 4-pack would be great. We'll need at least two cans for the comp, but more won't hurt.
