I know I have at least half of a 25 lbs. sack of flaked barley so we should be good. I will weigh tonight so everyone else will know if they need to order some or not.

I'm busy Friday night, but I can get with you Saturday sometime. The grain might still be here this weekend. I didn't hear anything today, maybe tomorrow.

OK, I was wrong on two fronts but sometimes two wrongs can make a right. I have less than half a sack of flaked barley, but it is a 50 lbs. sack not 25 lbs. Basically, I have about 15 lbs. of flaked barley available for the club to use for this stout. Just let me know if you want some. It only cost me $0.50 per pound so I will provide it at no cost to you for this beer. Can I write that off now that we are a non-profit?

Matt, you can take the cost of my share of the flaked barley off your share of the Midwest order. Unless you need the tax break...  Sure, provided that you donate the $500 that it costs to register as a 501c3. ;)

I see no correlation. As an economist, I can tell you the $500 is a sunk cost already taken on by the organization to become a nonprofit. The $500 is related to the organization's desire to benefit from a non-profit status. In the case of the club it was driven as a way to protect individuals from liability issues and not have to pay taxes on the club's income. The reason nonprofits can give a tax write-off is to provide benefit to those who donate and encourage people to support non-profit organizations. All that being said, my donation is too small to make it worth filling out any forms.

Does bring up a real point of discussion. Can we as a nonprofit accept donations from organizations and let them know it can be a tax deductible donation? Could encourage more donation.

You could always give a donation to me, as that does not require any paper work.

Nope.  Not unless we register as a 501c3, which takes $500 for the application.  When the paperwork is finally approved (hopefully soon) we'll be a 501c7.

Basically, besides the normal costs of incorporating (which are pretty inexpensive), to become a "tax-deductible" non-profit requires filing with the federal government, and they charge $500 to do so.  As we grow, we'll probably want to do so, but in the immediate future, we probably wouldn't get enough donations to cover the up-front cost.

Oh, and dues can't be considered tax-deductible.  -Jim

Matt, I'll need a pound of the flaked barley. You don't have any extra 2-row sitting around, do you? I need 4lb of that as well. I was planning on brewing Sunday afternoon provided I can get the 2-row and flaked barley by then.

John, you can have some barley flakes and yes I have some 2-row for you. Just call me this weekend and we'll figure out a time you can stop by. I have a birthday party tonight and I don't know what is going on this weekend other than I am building a chicken coop. How much 2-row do you need? I will get it bagged up and ready so if I am not around I could leave it on the porch for you. I recall you need the 2-row crushed too so I will take care of that for you. Call my cell (319) 654-5146 when you know when you might get free.

John, Upon reading this again I see you need 4 lbs. of 2-row. I will be around the house most of the day with different groups coming and going all day. You should be able to stop by any time, just call to make sure I didn't escape for a little while.
