The president of the beer nuts Matthew Franklin says homebrewing and craft brewing goes hand and hand.
"Homebrewing has actually spurred the entire craft beer movement. Especially for the initial period, pretty much the majority of brewers (and they say still two-thirds of commercial brewers) start as home brewers," Franklin said.

"Beer has always been a way to bring community together, and that started back in Europe" Franklin said. "Typically, a home brewer will be making it in the garage, and the neighbor sees, and is like 'well what are you doing?' and they think 'oh that's cool,' and this guy might start making beer, and it just spreads."
