The results are in:

Furious Clone
1st - Clint L.
2nd - Steven P.
3rd - Randy C.

Best IPA
1st - Steven P.
2nd - Clint L.
3rd - Randy C.

Thanks to Tony B, Jim F, and Kent B for the difficult task of judging this comp. Hopefully there taste buds will recover soon. Thanks also to Jim Potts and Steven P for providing Furious cans for reference. We had a total 8 entries for this competition. See me at IFOB or the club meeting for your score sheets.

Congrats to Clint and Randy!

Randy, thanks for hosting the tasting. I'd never seen a judging before and found the process and debate fascinating.

I have to say that this was truly a unique experience in judging. Much harder than judging to the style guide. You would think that it would be the opposite (easier since you're tasting them side-by-side). What also made it hard was that almost all the beers did not have any serious brewing flaws, they just missed the mark in copying Furious. Some got the flavor close, but not the aroma and vice versa. The top 2 were really close and we debated quite a bit before arriving at the final standings.

I agree with Tony, this one was really tough, plus we were trying to judge on two separate categories (Furious clone and best IPA) simultaneously using one score sheet. I think I was too hard on several good beers because they weren't exactly like Furious. I think there was one beer that I didn't like, but it was late in the judging, so it may have been that my taste buds were just burnt out.
