Specialty Beer Comp and Sweet Meads

I was wondering when and who I need to hand in my beers for the Specialty beer competition and the sweet mead competition. My understanding from the last meeting the sweet mead was kinda a flop between Big T and me unless someone else had a sweet mead to enter.

I don't have a mead but I do want to enter a specialty. I'm also curious when this deadline is.

Since we have a current lack of entries I'm giving till the xmas party. 12.18 but we need to keep moving with this so this is dead final regardless of number of entries

Sorry to hijack Kurt, but would a Belgian ipa fall into this category? Or would it be a belgian specialty?

Well since I haven’t tasted it, its hard to know what your classifying as a Belgian IPA, but if it doesn’t fall into any other category then it falls into this catch all. In all reality you could pretty much put anything in this category for our purpose, but if this was a BJCP judging where we were doing many categories your beer that fits a style might have a better chance to place than in the melting pot of styles.

Word. I will submit it anyway and let you guys decide if it fits. As far as the style, its a golden strong malt and yeast profile with a ton of american hops. 9.5%, 110 ibu

Any update on this? Is there going to be a judging or not? Sorry if I sound like bitching, but it keeps getting pushed back. If we set a deadline for something we need to stick to it.

Also, are we skipping the sweet mead? In either case we should draw for the 2011 categories to keep things moving.

The picking of the next round of Comp Styles is on the agenda for the Jan regular meeting.

We also have several other key pieces of business to attend to - Brew mag subscription renewals and grain purchase both come to mind as recent topics.

I think we discussed this at one of the more recent meetings. We should make sure that we produced the comp list for 2 years out and maintain that. So that people can plan and brew accordingly.

Randy, first off thanks for reminding me I met to line something up so we could wrap this up right after the holiday. For awhile we only had two entries so I was dragging my feet trying to get more as well as deciding to enter mine.

The deadline for entries was the holiday party, so the entries are closed. As I’m entering my entries I’m planning on stewarding this judging if there is no objection to those who entered in the comp. I know this is going to be a tricky comp and would like to help out. With that said, I’d be willing to hold the comp at my house again and assuming I steward we would need 3 judges that did not enter in a beer.

Judging usually takes about 2-3 hours, bring your own pencil. If your interested in judging and/or hosting, please PM me or make some noise on this thread.

Some suggested dates for this competition would be:

Sunday 9th 6pm
Monday 10th 7pm
Thursday 13th 7pm
Sunday 16th 6 pm

Since there seems to be very little interest for the Meads, sadly… that is going to get scraped. Although Chris’ brew was very tasty!

I know since things lap were moving to 3 contest a year instead of 4 and it was suggested we pull a new one out every time we do one comp so this way we always stay out 1 year on the schedule. So this next meeting we will draw 3 categories and each time we complete one comp we will draw another rather than all at once each year.

I would suggest not scraping competitions, this could tend to be very discouraging to members. Especially if they brewed a beer specifically for the competition.

With no entries the comp would simply be forfeit and scratched off the list as a style preventing it from being pulled until all other styles have been comped. If one entry exists that entry receives points for 1st, no points assigned for 2nd or 3rd, if 2 entires exists a 1st and 2nd awarded with no 3rd points assigned and so forth.

I agree with Jeremy, if Chris is the only one who entered a mead then he should get the points for first. For the future, we should probably have a clear rule to cover this. Say, for example, we need to have a minimum of 3 or 4 entries. I realize this is a significant time investment for judges, so we need to make it worth it for them.

We also really need to stick to the dates we set for entries. Some styles don't age well so sitting an extra month or two in the bottle can have a negative impact.

I really like the idea of drawing a new category as we go.

Specialty Judging and Mead entries

All, still looking for 2-3 judges for the specialty competition that will likely take place at my house.

Also I'm lining up the entries for the mead competition. If you have any please bring them to the next meeting. If you have your entry and cannot attend the next meeting please make arrangement with me, I'm closing off the entry deadline at the end of this month as were running behind I want to close these two comps out and get back on track for 2011.

As mentioned we will be doing one less competition each year but will work on always knowing a year out what category for the competition will be so you can have enough time to brew/age any style.

Lastly if you want to judge for the mead comp, be thinking about the judging that will take place early February.

If you have any questions, please let me know, the next 3 comps will be pulled from the hat this January meeting.

Since I didn't get to finish my entries, I can judge the Specialties.

Thursday the 13th works best for me right now.
