Just thought I'd let you all know that the Russian Imperial Stout I brewed on February 2nd is finally ready. Its on tap at the pub. Its six bucks for a tulip. Its a little pricey I know, but its 11.5 % so it doesn't take much.
Thanks to Karl ( Carl ? ) for the beer's name. He suggested Dark Matter. I liked it and thats what we went with.
PS Because all the draft lines are wrapped around the same glycol pack the beer is served at about 39 degrees. So let it warm up a bit. I soaked 12 lbs of oak chips in 8 bottles of Jack Daniels and made an extract with some of the RIS to add to it. I'd appreciate any feed back on how much bourbon or oak character you think it has or is lacking. I think its a little too... well I'll wait and see what you think.
PPS That was a long PS

I look forward to trying it. I also look forward to the end of the bourbon barrel fad.

Travis,
I really appreciate your letting us know. You're plenty busy so I don't want to sound like a pain, but we'd all love to hear more about whatever you're working on and when stuff goes on tap.
I think I can speak for most, if not all, in saying that we really think you are making some downright wonderful beers. It's like a tiny desert isle in a sea of mediocrity (Iowa). Things are getting better overall, but you are really leading the charge!
OK, enough gushing...Now I need to make another excuse to go into town so I can try some.

Decided to check it out over lunch. A very, very nice RIS. Smooth and well balanced. The bourbon/oak is pretty subtle. My only complaint is that they serve it too cold, so have a Hopturnal while waiting for it to warm up.
Gotta concur w/ Randy. 't is making some really nice stuff. Too bad their kitchen is still adrift in the "sea of mediocrity."

I can't wait to taste it. I heard it was really good. I wish he wasn't so stingy with it. I'll try and stop in maybe tonight for a taste.

If I can make it through this week I'm off for the next 2. I'll have to stop by and try it. Unless you drunks drink it all before then.

Tasted the RIS today and ordered a Hopturnal at the same time to allow the stout to warm up per your suggestion.
Well done. Lovely roasty and ester-filled aroma with dark fruit and coffee. The flavor follows aroma with a nice bitter barley and hop finish that I'm still tasting 30 min later. Boozy and a full bodied beer. Didn't get much oak or bourbon at all really.

Travis,
I was in on Friday afternoon, I tried the RIS and waited for it to warm. Got to say that it was very nice.
Personally, I would have liked a little more of the oak and bourbon to come through, but still very nice.
Great job, keep putting out those great beers for us man, we really appreciate it!

It's really not that good Travis.
You should probably just let me bring some kegs over for you to fill. I would hate for you to have to dump it down the drain and feel bad. I will give it a good home. In my Belly!

A double thumbs up from me. Ask the bartender to heat up your glass in hot water first. It speeds up the process by a good 15 minutes.
