Spring Grain order
Spring Grain order
I will be collecting order information at the January meeting. Here's a link to the Briess grain page.

You can order extract and adjuncts as well.
Once I get the order info I will give it to Chris and he will place it with his next shipment. I am hoping for sometime in February.
Oh, and it sounds like they are contracted with Briess so they price increase will be less then the open market.

Tom, thanks for organizing. Is there pricing on the Briess site? I realize that will be a little higher in price, but it would be nice to get a ball park figure.

If I remember correctly we never have the exact pricing available until the order goes in. These are purchased under whole sale pricing and changes fairly frequently as the base of Malt is a commodity and fluctuates daily with the markets.
The range is usually $25 - $35/50# sack, this excludes DME and such which on last years order cost me about $65/55# sack.

I store mine in salt pales from my aquarium salt. They are food grade and have a sealing lit that screws down. They are actually quite simliar to fermentation pales except that the lits are screw down instead of snap down.
The biggest thing is to keep moisture away from DME. So anything that you can keep air tight will work find. If you really had too, a couple of garbage bags inside of a sturdy box would work ok.

Very good point. When you transfer it into a storage container, the dryer the room, the better. So winter is ideal, provided you haven't just mashed or done a boil. The biggest thing is to keep moisture away from DME.

Re: Spring Grain order
Good point Jim, however, the only way to cover my body and have the dog lick it off is in a moist place like the shower, for some reason when I do it other ways, it just falls to the floor and the dog gets DME and I get nothing, thats not fair.JimPotts wrote:On Wed, Jan 5, 2011 at 3:38 PM, BrewHound <brew-members@crbeernuts.org (brew-members@crbeernuts.org)> wrote:Very good point. It sounded like the increase would be a few cents/pound. It my abused and somewhat hazy memory serves me right last year I averaged about $23 a bag. That was an increase from about $21-$22 a bag the year before. So my guess would be under $30.
Also think about splitting specialty or other lighter usage grains between a two or more people. I did this with Jeremy last year. Grains like munichs, vienna, crystals, that you won't need #50 of, but you might want #15-#25. If stored properly (like leaning against the wall in your basement, sorry CJ) they will last a year or better. Especially the crystals with no real gravity points.
As for storing grain, if you split bags, Hy-Vee bakeries sell the 2 gallon buckets with an o-ring lid for a buck. Each one will hold #15. Thay had frosting in them and clean out very easily.

I'd be interested in going in together on some specialty grains. Caramel 20, 40, 60 for sure, maybe some roasted barley, choc malt.
Question: for one basic base malt, I can't decide if it would be better to get pale ale or plain 2-row? My thinking is that since I have a good supply of pilsen, the pale ale might be the way to go.

Randy, I'll be willing to go in with you on the Caramel 20, 40 & 60. I'm also up for roasted barley, choc malt and maybe some black malt and rye flakes.carrisr wrote:I'd be interested in going in together on some specialty grains. Caramel 20, 40, 60 for sure, maybe some roasted barley, choc malt.

grain order
I didn't read this thread so forgive me if you've gotten this taken care of already. But Chris from Millstream just called me and wanted me to let the right person know that he needs an email tonight for the grain order tomorrow. I didn't know who to tell. I emailed Coughlin (Hi Dave) so he may be posting something here too.
Cheerio!
