Beer School

Post by carrisr »

I've had a couple of ideas bouncing around in the prodigious empty space in my cranium the last few days....

Beer School: This is a more formalized version of "who's brewing". It would be a chance for new brewers to learn how to get started, perhaps before they even buy equipment. It could be run perhaps a couple of times per year.

The idea is to do it after a major event such as Benz. People would sign up, possibly even pay a small fee for ingredients, and come learn to brew hands-on. We'd probably do two small batches: one extract and one all-grain, using very simple setups. Students would participate in the whole process, and even split the bounty.

This is something I'd be willing to help organize and even host if necessary.

Randy, this is essential Big Brew day, although for us we don't celebrate this in the typical manner by brewing a bunch of beer on small rigs.

I could see this being most valuable towards the later part of the year after we have a series of events we participate in, we could also set something up as a more formal demo. Although to make this valuable we would really want to get a good handful of potential brewers and hopefully a few new folks in the club.

Have kick the idea around some more... are you volunteering to teach the class? ?

Sounds a lot more like Teach a Friend to Brew Day which is the first Saturday in November each year per the AHA. It is now known as Learn to Homebrew Day. We did this once at BA's years ago. Pictures are on the website. We had three different systems and lots of good food. Would be nice to try this again. Here is the AHA link. My system is no longer very portable and my garage is not very big. Anybody have a garage ideally with water that could host a multi-brewer day? This is one of the main annual AHA events and would be nice to participate.

I'd be happy teach and host if necessary, though it might be too far out for some... As for a garage, do you think this would be big enough?

We could do the "teach a friend to brew day", but I wish it wasn't in November. That's pretty late in the year and between unpredictable weather and things getting very busy I'm wondering if we can get enough people interested.

We'd definitely want to use events to promote it, and I'd want people to sign up for it. That way we know ahead of time if we have enough participants.

I also want this to be hands on and instructive, not just a big social gathering. The point is to get the new or potential brewers to do everything with guidance of more experienced brewers. It would let them try it out without having to buy all the equipment. At the end of the process they'd bottle their beer and have something to show for it.

If you get an error, please copy and paste it into an email for me.  I'm still squashing a few bugs left over from the unexpected server move.
