Beer Nut Nation,

As I mentioned in the January meeting, our club was probed by Flecks Beer sales and their newly started department for Craft Brew sales. This includes beers such as Sam Adams, New Belgium, Potosi and Blue Moon.

If your interested in working some nights and weekends promoting these types of products in the CR grocery stores and such area then come out to the upcomming meeting.

I'm going to continue to work with Chad on any fund raising we can do for club with Flecks.

Below is what Chad sent from Fleck, please let me know if your thinking of attending the informational meeting. He is looking for 4 more people I believe between the IC and CR area.

Travis,

I want to schedule a meeting for next Wednesday, Feb 2nd to introduce this opportunity to whomever might be interested. It will be at 6pm at Shuey’s Restaurant and Lounge in Shueyville. There will be people from both Iowa City and Cedar Rapids so I wanted to pick a spot in between. Please pass this along to your group and let me know how many people might be able to attend.

Thanks!

chad

I'll be there, providing I can get out of my driveway.

Anyone going to this tonight, I'm trying to get a head count. I might have a work conflict so I'm not sure if I can make it or might be running late.

I'm thinking about going. I'm mainly curious to see what they want and where they might be going with "craft" beers.

How did it turn out?

Well, you didn’t miss it all, if your interested in working for Flecks, they are holding a written exam next Monday and those who pass will then be given a tasting evaluation some time later. Tasting would ideally happen between 4pm – 7pm Thurs, Friday, and Saturdays. You would likely be serving and promoting beers such as, NB, Sam Adams, potosi, boulevard, big sky etc.

I’m still kicking around the idea with flecks for any club fund raising ideas, possible co-funded beer event and just keeping on the pulse of what Flecks is doing. They offered to keep us more in tune with special events, new beers to the area, etc.

I think there is some really good potential for some fund raising, and if your looking for a few extra bucks at the expense of your weekend nights, then there could be a job opportunity for club folks.. (brings lots of BN club cards)

On a side note, the Shuey bar was a fun little place, as I haven’t been there before, its very rustic but updated atmosphere , they had a few good beers, and a big buck hunter in the men’s bathroom. I didn’t have any food, but noticed a few plates of chow around me, and they looked fairly hearty.

Seriously a written test and tasting panel? What kind of money are they indicating that they would be contributing? This sounds like it may be more of a commitment than I originally thought. I would maybe still be interested, though.

These upcoming test I believe are for PT employment only, nothing has been firmed up for club fundraising. I certainly appreciate your interest but if your concern is club related, then I would just hold tight until things are further along.

Any more info on the written test?
Where and when? What should I study this weekend? I think I'm going to give it a shot.

Basically he said he just wants to make sure that the people doing this have the background to be able to talk somewhat intelligently about beers, beer styles, how beer is made etc. Nothing like BJCP or Cicerone standards. From the sample type questions he threw out there I doubt anyone in this group would have any trouble getting 80% right (which is what he said "passing would be). Keep in mind the audience for this will be people who know very little about beer. But he wants us to be able to provide some basic education to those who are interested in the attempt to get more people interested/appreciative of craft beers.

On a related note: It sounds like they plan to keep bringing on more and more small breweries to their lineup which I whole-heartedly support. The current distribution system makes it very tough for small brands to get shelf space. The fact that the Miller-Coors distrib in our area wants to give these smaller guys a chance is great. In addition to the ones Travis mentioned, they currently have Empyrean, and are bringing in Lucky Bucket next week. This fall they are bringing in a certain MI brewery that I'm very excited about (not sure if I'm supposed to say who) but let's just say they're well known for their breakfast stout.
