Two hoppy beers at Blairs Ferry Road Hy-Vee

Post by Matt F »

From their email-

Your Blairs Ferry Road Hy-Vee Drugstore took delivery today of 2 COLLOSSALLY hoppy new IPA style beers, including ‘Hop-wired’ from New Zealand, and the UNBELIVABLY hopped Mikeller American Style IPA from Denmark, boasting an INCREDIBLE 1000 theoretical IBU’S! If you’re a Hop-Head, you are looking twice right now…did he say 1000 IBU’S?? Yes. 1000. To quote one reviewer of this beer from a beer lover’s blog… “Each painful sip was like chewing on a hop kernel…and I loved it.”

Hop-wired ($9.99) and Mikeller 1000 ($12.99) are very limited in quantity, so it is first come, first served. Both are sold in individual bottles. Come be a part of the Hop-Head Revolution!

Mikeller AIPA sounds more like DD7, stain eraser, hope they have a picture of Billy Mays on the front, should go for 19.95 and come with a free opener.

1000 IBU's worth of hops I assume. I don't think a lab has measured over 100 IBU's from what I've heard.
That said, I was very impressed by the Mikellar single hop beers. At 100 IBU's they were a good presentation of each hop variety. I learned cat pee doesn't have to be a classic overhopped characteristic.
I'll have to pick some up. I haven't been slapped in a while.

They boast a 1000 theoretical IBU's, not actual. So any brew software will give the theoretical IBU's to make one, kind of a waste of hops, but a pretty cool experiment.

Agreed, 1,000 IBUs on ProMash or something, but not in the mouth. Still hoppy as heck I imagine.

Two hoppy beers at Blairs Ferry Road Hy-Vee

Tried it this weekend…it was ok. I’ve had much better DIPA’s. Aroma was pretty good citrus, pine and mango, not nearly as aromatic as I was expecting. It is coming across the pond so I am sure it lost some of its hoppiness. I didn’t see a “bottled on” date so have no clue how old it was. It was in a paper wrapper to keep the light out so that helped. The mouthfeel was not what I expected, it was hoppy but it was pretty sweet and well balanced but also very lack luster. I was expecting a slap you in the face bitterness and aroma but it just wasn’t there. It was It was worth a try but, I would give is a C+ or B- for a score.
