Hello to all you Nuts! I am making plans for Beer Camp 2011. A weekend I am considering is camping on Saturday, July 9, 2011. We will again be at Pinicon Ridge Park in Central City. More details to come but in a nut shell, there will be a canoe/tubing trip (shorter than last year), open invitation to other area homebrew clubs and and other friends of the Beer Nuts, and I hope to add a food component.

The main feedback I am looking for at this point is, are most of you who would like to come available for the proposed date? I am looking at July because it falls between Benz in May and a bunch of festivals starting in late August. I hope more people can come with more time between weekend beer events.

The float trip will be half as long as many people indicated they would like to tube. Also, we came close to losing some folks last year with more time on the water. I will be certifed for first aid and CPR by the end of April, but if any of you need mouth to mouth...you're a dead man.

More details to come, want to set the date ASAP and start spreading the news.

Beer Camp 2011 is set for Saturday, July 9, 2011. We will be at the same campsite as last year which is Group Camp Site #7 in Pinicon Ridge Park, Central City, IA. Activities will be a tubing/canoe tip on the Wapsi River followed by camping eating and drinking beer. We get the campsite at 3 PM and check out time is 1 PM.

I plan on us starting the float trip around noon. I do not have any tubes so you will need to line up your own floatation device. Maybe some folks in the club can help track some down. I do have access to a few canoes if you want to paddle. I plan to bring at least one to carry supplies.

Kegs are not allowed at the campsite. I had one discretely in my car which went unoticed. Growlers and such were fine last year. Big thing is we can't leave a huge mess. Wasn't a problem last year.

More details will continue to follow but you can mark your calendar for July 9.

Post here if you plan to come to beer camp and if you want to tube or canoe. I can get a couple of canoes, but you are on your own for tubes. Plan is to do a short float starting around noonish. Remember you cna come out for the day or just show up at night to camp. If you don't want to camp, park closes at 10:30.

Yes, you can rent canoes if they are available. Last year all canoes were rented out over a month in advance. You have to call and reserve them yourself. You have to pay when you reserve. I attached the rental details. It doesn't work to just show up and get a canoe. We will be starting at the 2 hr trip mark so there is plenty of time for swimming and bridge jumping. if you use their shuttle you start at 1 PM. I am thinking we may shoot for a start time around 1:30 so we are behind the parks last group.

I am posting some pictures and more info for folks about the float trips. If there is enough interest, I would like to canoe from the same starting point as last year with a few folks. We could start around 11 AM. Then we will meet up with every one that wants to tube or do a shorter canoe trip at the "Old Paris Bridge" which is now Sutton Road around 1 PM. That is the red metal bridge where many folks like to jump off for swimming. There is a nice sandbar to hang out on to wait for a meeting place. Start posting here if you wish to canoe or tube and if you want to do a 4 hour or 2 hour trip. Travis, you in for 4 hours or 2? I have three canoes right now for folks that want to use that option. Otherwise, any inflatable device to float will work for tubing. As we get a count we can figure out car pooling and other arrangements. The pdf attachment is a description of the canoe route including a picture of the bridge on Sutton Road.

For those wondering how to get to camp, here are some pictures to help with that. The group sites are in the main park and a long ways back down a gravel road that makes my driveway look timid. Also, Blodgett Road does not run in through the back of the parks. It is closed. If you are coming from Cedar Rapids on Hwy 13, you enter the park before you cross the river. The individual camp sites at Flying Squirrel Campground are on the other side of the river from our Group Camp Site #7. Post if you want to just come camp too and if you need a tent/camper mate. Remember, it is $13 per sleeping unit so you can save a few bucks by sharing. Also bring some food to eat. Nothing formal has been done here. I will probably bring some hot dogs or something to fill the belly. We will have a nice fire for cooking. Feel free to invite friends. It is a party.

Sorry Dude, had to get something locked down before the crazy end of summer festival schedule. Maybe next year.

Matt,
Count me in for the two hour float. I'll also be staying the night. I have a 4-man tent, which means it fits two comfortably. I also have a decent sized screened shelter if we need it.

Sounds good Randy, bring the screen shelter just in case. Would be nice if it rains at all or if the bugs were out of control. Tube or canoe your preference?

50% chance I'll be there to camp.
0% chance I'll be there for the canoe/tube event.
