All 3 rhizomes of Cascade I transplanted from Matt last year survived the winter and have healthy bines going. I've plucked them down to 2-3 bines each rather than let them all go. They each started to shoot out about a dozen bines.

From stuff I have read, it is recommended to trim back the whole lot at first. More will come and then train 2-3 like you have here. I am sure it's all good but I usually cut everything back until May and then grow 3 bines from there. I transplanted my entire root ball from my mom's garden to mine last year and just let it go to re-establish itself. I have at least a hundred bines popping out of the ground right now and will cut them back until the first week of May. Glad to see they are taking off for you. They really are a hearty, easy to grow plant and if anybody wants a rhizome, let me know. I probably need to cut it back again.

Matt, I would like a couple, last time I got 3 and for some reason only one made it. It is doing really well, but would like a couple more.Matt F wrote:From stuff I have read, it is recommended to trim back the whole lot at first. More will come and then train 2-3 like you have here. I will attempt to bring you some to the next meeting. If we catch some dry weather to dig in. Anyone else let me know and I will bring some more.

I'd like a couple if you can spare them. I hope to make it to the April meeting but might be late.
Thanks,
Jim Fuller

My Cascade plant (year 4 from a Matt cutting) is sending out bines in all directions. Like Matt, if we catch a break in the weather, I will dig up some rhisomes and bring to the meeting.

Plant now. That way, they'll be established and producing by the time you're ready. -Jim

Yup, the first few years you get some hops, but they are not that great. The first few years are for root development. The third or fourth year the plant is mature so I would say plant now. Plus, the rhizomes are free so you can throw them in the ground and watch 'em grow. I have had years where I did not pick any and just let them die. Doesn't hurt anything.

Dug up a couple of roots this weekend. Cut them into smaller pieces (2" - 3" long). Will bring to the meeting (assuming I remember to get them out of the fridge).
Also cut back all the bines over 4" tall to go for the second wave like Matt suggested.
