I have been to Red's twice this month with my wife. We went both times around 5 to catch the 2 for 1 special they run for happy hour every day. I really like the place. Pretty good food and the best draft selectrion we have available in the area. North Liberty is really not that far away. If you haven't been there you really need to go. Call ahead and they will put you on the wait list so you won't wait long for a table once you get there.

Was there last Saturday and tried a Toppling Goliath Naughty 90 which is supposed to be a 100 IBU 6.5% IPA with oak flavoring. It did not seem that bitter and did not have a strong hop aroma or flavor. The oak was there but the beer had a nutty flavor, perhaps Victory that was too strong and reminded me of Fat Tire. It was OK, drinkable, and I will try their beer again, but I did not care for this one.

The next beer was Great River Hop A Potamus which is a 9% Rye Pale Ale. I think this could have been a good beer but I was overwhelmed by diacetyl. All I can think about was the diacetyl and do not recall much for hoppiness.

Lastly I went to my go to there, Bells Two Hearted. I really like this beer and it is really cool to have it on draft regularly in Eastern Iowa. It is also available as a 2 for 1 so I did have two.

I'll probably go there Tuesday, it's my birthday, and as long as I don't blow it this weekend at the benz event, my wife will let me go.

Matt, do you get down there with your kids? We have two young kids and I'm terrified to take them out to any restaurant right now.

Ive taken my kids there many times. They do have a kids menu and high chairs. But I know what you mean, if I can leave my kids with a babysitter, it makes for a more enjoyable time out.

We used to go there with my son when we lived in NL, but my wife was just pregnant with #2 then. I could probably count on one hand the number of times we've gone out to eat with both since the 2nd was born.

Back to Red's, I really want to get down there to try the dieu du ciel Aphrodisiaque...has anyone had a chance to try this yet?

I haven't taken my kids to Red's yet. We do take them out to eat at least once a week though. I have four ages 8, 5, 2 and 2. They do pretty well. Did have to bail once at Olive Garden when the youngest was being a lit a-hole. Lately, my wife and I have been going to Red's as our date place. Love the 2 for 1's. She gets bloody mary's which are pretty tasty. I see a lot of kids there and it is loud in there so even if they are screaming I don't know that anyone would notice. Basically, I wouldn't hesitate to go, but get on the wait list early. The waiting to sit down is usually what kills my kids.

Yes, I tried the Aphrodisiaqu last time I was there. It was pretty good, but
not mind blowing. Very chocolaty. It's worth trying if you make it down. Matt,
I also tried the Naughty 90. I though it was OK, but I didn't read the
description first so I didn't go into it with any expectations. My favorite
beer I had there on the last trip was the Flying Dog Raging Bitch. One of the
best Belgian IPA's I think I've had.

As for kids in tow: they do have a very nice outdoor patio with a fire pit and
portable heaters for cool evenings. From the perspective of a coupe without
kids, we don't mind boisterous children nearly as much when we're outside, as
long as they're not totally out of control. It's usually not the kids that
bother us, it's the totally oblivious parents we see at so many restaurants.

Recently when dining out we were seated next to a table with five or six kids
ranging from about 4 to 12 or so. They were very well behaved. So much so that
several people stopped to thank that parents. One guy gave them a $20!

Holy smokes, a $20! Where is that at? We get compliments all the time when we go out to eat, but nobody ever gave us any $. The key for us is know your kids. We tend to keep them in check and when going out to eat, it is best that they are hungry and well rested. All our kids have been going out to eat fairly regularly since birth and the practice helps. When we haven't gone for a while they often make the request. They often request 3rd base because you get a TV at your table. Works for me, they have good beer.

I'm actually not so much worried about my kids bothering other people, I'm worried about my kids bothering me.

We have a 2 yr old and a 9 month old, so the chances of us eating warm food and actually enjoying eating out is still pretty slim. Actually, my youngest is mostly on "adult food" now, so it may not be the disaster I am envisioning in my head. and 2 for 1 Two Hearteds....makes my own heart skip a beat.

Maybe we need a beer club babysitting program. One night a month where we have some poor soul watch the entire bunch and go out for a good time with the wives.

Just a thought.

Pretty good idea CJ.

When the grand parents are busy, which is more frequently with 4 kids than when we only had 2, we use a babysitting co-op. My wife is in a 20 member ladies group that is a babysitting co-op. She watches kids to get points and then we burn points when other members watch our kids. It has worked really well for date nights or so she can do an appoinment without me missing work.

Some club members may have kids old enough to offer some sitting services too.

I tried it and thought it was very good. Chocolaty, but good. I prefered the Haandbryggeriet Dark Force Imperial Wheat Stout. This was a great beer I would like to try and make.
