I'm relatively new to homebrewing, and this is my first time posting on the forum. As the subject line would indicate, I'm trying to find a good source for bottles. So far, the advice that I've gotten is:
(1) purchase beer and keep the bottles,
(2) ask your friends to drink said beer and give you the bottles,
(3) purchase bottles from homebrew suppliers, or
(4) quit wasting your time with bottles and switch to kegging.
I plan to switch to kegging in about a year, but right now I don't have the space in my apartment for a kegerator. In the meantime, I'll stick with bottling. The question I pose to the forum is: is there a good source around the CR/IC area to procure used bottles?
Thanks for your help.

Question about finding bottles
I have at least 3-4 cases of bottles you can have. They were all cleaned and rinsed a long time ago. Now they are dusty and they still have the lables on. I was going to take them back to the store as they are taking up space in the brewery. You can have them for free. Just need to pick them up or come to the next meeting and I will bring them with. They are mostly 12 oz brown long neck bottles.

Question about finding bottles
Welcome to the forum...all you need to do is host a beer nut meeting and you will likely end up with a case or 2 of bottles or clean up at the long branch.
Other than that I know from time to time folks in the club give bottles away...don't know anywhere in town to buy new bottles.

Same here, I have several cases of bottles that are cleaned and sanitized with the labels removed. That I have been keeping for just suck occassion as I strictly keg. I have both 12 oz as well as 22 oz bottles.
If you want them they are yours. Just PM me with a phone number if you are interested.
Note: Several of us are leaving early in the week for the National Homebrewers Conference. So if you need them quickly you should get up with one of the posters soon. As two of the posters on this forum so far are going.

Gents,
I've contacted a couple of you individually regarding your bottles. Thanks to all for the generous offers. I think that should do it for me for quite some time.
As a point of clarification, has anyone approached Hyvee, other supermarkets, or other bottle redemption centers for their returned bottles. I heard an urban legend about someone going to a Hyvee and paying the store the deposit for used bottles. Anyone have any experience with this? I tried this once recently but failed miserably.
Thanks again and have fun at the conference (for those of you going).

I knew of a buddy of a buddy who worked out a deal with the Can Shed to get their flip top grolsch bottles. He cleaned them and resold them to homebrewers. I heard he has since given up the biz. But perhaps Can Shed might be willing to do it for you instead.

I think he came to a meeting once. I pissed him off and he never came back.tedly wrote:I knew of a buddy of a buddy who worked out a deal with the Can Shed to get their flip top grolsch bottles.
