First Wort Hopping

Post by kjball »

Need a little guidance here, Can I use FWH to replace my 60 min addition? I've seen all sorts of advice out there regarding this. Mostly that if I do a FWH, I should lower my other additions by ~30%. In my head, I should be able to move my bittering addition to FWH and leave my flavor and aroma additions alone. Make sense? Anyway, looking for some "expert opinions"
Thanks

I did an on-the-fly change to my bittering addition last weekend with Janet's Brown Ale. The mash hopping didn't seem to add much flavor, so I just changed my 60 minute addition to FWH. The only things I've read about FWH are that it either does nothing special at all (i.e. relative to a 60 minute bittering addition) or that it adds a ton of hop flavor. Obviously I was hoping for the latter of the two with the brown ale. I'll let you know how it went in a week or two.

The NB Furious clone kit has you FWH. So there must be some advantage or Surly wouldn't have recommended it.
