2011 Independence Brew-B-Q

Post by Derek »

The Independence Brew B Q is Saturday August 27 from 3-7 pm, just over 6 weeks away. That's the weekend before the Festival of Iowa Beers.

Those of us that went up to Indee last year had fun. Not much of a craft beer drinking crowd, milder beers and fruit beers seemed to go over best.

They're looking at getting the names and styles of the beers we're going to be bringing. The list doesn't need to be finalized yet, but I think it's time to start getting things together.

Who's in, whatcha bringing...will we have enough participation to warrent bringing the club draft setup, or should we go smaller scale?

I plan on coming, and bringing either an American Wheat, or a Hefe. Probably the Hefe.

I plan on going and bringing 5 gallons of Patersbier, which I guess would be best described as a Belgian single or Belgian Pale Ale.

I may try to work it in this year but won't know until last minute. I have never been before. When does it start? What time do we usually leave for the event? When do we get back home?

Thanks Derek, you beat me to the post, I’ve been talking with Joe as well.

I’m fully anticipating on bringing the tap and here is why
<![if !supportLists]>- <![endif]>CRAZE brew club

As I mentioned before they are showing up and it sounds like not only do we have our own personal sense of accomplishment to outperform the club, but it also sounds like brewBQ is going to up the stakes by offering a contest between the two clubs. I don’t think details are finalized, but I hope we can come out in a decent amount in number and bring out some fun brew again.

I also totally agree with Derek’s perception that the overall masses will enjoy the less complex beers or fruity if your looking to please the masses and pull towards a peoples vote. But I wouldn’t let that stop you from bringing anything else, you might turn on a few folks to some other big beers.

I'm fermenting the T-Can and Bearcat's Wheaten Beatdown (a hoppy wheat beer, but with 1056 ale yeast) from NB as we speak, that I plan to bring.

Are we going to do some sort of carpool? I'd like to hitch a ride, as I've never been to Independence before.

I'm willing to attend and donate a corny. I've got a Burton ESB in a secondary and a Belgian Dubble in a primary that will be ready by then. So it will probably be one of them unless I come up with something else in the next couple of weeks.

Have we heard anyting on that Cheq museum event? I doubt I'll be able to do both BBq and the Cheq thing. But if that's not happening I'll probably go to BBQ

that sounds awesome.. I’m thirsty all ready.. oh wait its Friday before noon… drats.

For those of you who went last year, and have any recommendations please share them on this forum, or at the next meeting. The folks running the BrewBQ are open for any suggestions.

I think overall it went well last year, so I’m sure there is room for improvement, but I can’t think of anything that went wrong besides me tripping on the kegs sitting in the middle of the pen there. Which this year should be fixed by using the new tap box.

Independence Brew B Q - Beer List

Post by Derek »

The Independence Brew-B-Q is preparing the program they'll be printing for the event. They'd like us to prepare a list for them to publish in the program (and it will be used as the ballot for voting for favorite beer).
They need a Beer Name and Style.

I know we may not know what all we've got until we get set up in Independence, but we can supply what we can and indicate there will be may be some surprise extras at the event. I'll ask about leaving a space for a write-in vote.

They'll be printing these up early next week, so we need to get this list together as soon as possible.

Judging... if anyone is interested in judging the barbeque competition there's a spot or two available. Judging will be from 12:15 to 1. Anyone interested?

CRAZE is participating in this event, and (I believe) putting on a homebrew demonstration from 11:30 to 1:30. So unless we get up there very early, the prime real estate (small shelter with a concrete pad) will very likely be theirs.

I'll inquire about a printable flyer.

We should also start a list of who's bring what items...things like
Club Box
CO2
Club Banner
White Board and Markers
Flyers for September Longbranch meeting
Beer Nuts Cards

List so far

Post by Derek »

I’ve composed a list based on the posts so far. (Sorry if I missed any.) I made up the names, styles and quantities as I went through the list, feel free to update as necessary and repost. I guess I didn’t read past the 3-way Berry Wheat, because I too am bringing a chocolate porter. I may have a hefe too, depending on if anyone else is bringing one, and whether I’ve got any left (my wife really likes it).

Three-Way Berry Wheat – American Wheat with Mulberries, Blackberries, and Blueberries – John Eikenberry
(sounds like fun to me)
Crazy Cola – Amber Ale made with Coke – 5 gallons – John Eikenberry
Double Chocolate Hazelnut Porter – ??? Porter – 5 gallons - John Eikenberry
TLA Porter - ??? Porter – 5 gallons – Jim Potts
Patersbier – Belgian Pale Ale – 5 gallons – Dave R
T-Can And Bearcat’s Wheaten Beatdown – Hoppy American Wheat – 5 gallons – Tony B
Double D’s Chocolate Porter – Robust Porter – 5 gallons - Derek
??? – Imperial India Pale Ale – 2 gallons – Canadian J
??? - ??? - ??? – Jim F
??? - ??? - ??? – Big T
??? - ??? - ??? – Tom Burns

Club RIS?

Randy - maybe
Matt – are you still a maybe?
