White Star Ale House downtown

Post by TappedOut »

They have a big banner hanging up outside the building. I was peering in windows this weekend and it looks like they've got a fair amount more work left to do, but on facebook they claim to be opening Sept 1 (we'll see...) Their website looks to be in progress, but still a fairly respectable beer list.

Also, there's a banner up for a Jamaican restaurant next door.

Think its a goof they have their dinners priced under 5 bucks. I want prime rib for 4.49...or king crab for 4.95.

I think their website is still under construction. I noticed the prices, too! Their frontpage only gives you an email contact, but google apparently crawled deeper into the website.

They must be getting close. Pics on their FB page shows a nice looking bar. Their beer list looks nice on their homepage. I like how Miller High Life is nestled in between Brother Thelonious and Hennepin on the menu. As if its hiding out or something. Nice. http://www.facebook.com/whitestaralehouse

There's a Jamaican restaurant in the same building, only open for lunch, that I checked out last week. No beer, but really good food. I poked my head in White Star while there -- the building is looking really close, and is beautiful. Their website looks to have a more accurate menu and beer list now.

Unrelated but they had a little write up on Backpocket as well.

Did the Jamaican restaurant for lunch today. Good, but mild for the style of jerk that I like. Other items were very good - Pattie and Festival.

As I was leaving, I poked my head inside White Star and the Sous Chef came over an we chatted. They are looking to open this Monday for bar and apps, with the dining room/full menu to open within the week. Scoped out the actual taps, of which there are lots on the tower and saw several Boulevard, a Bells or two and Empyrean. The decor is very nice. Looking forward to checking it out.

Hopefully they live up to the hype. If the food and beer is all they are showing it should become a staple. I'm getting tired of the tease though.

I'm thinking on going down there tonight. According to their FB page if you mention FB to the bartender your first beer is free, but only tonight. We'll probably try to be there around 5:30.

How was it?

Thinking about checking it out this afternoon, maybe dinner, if the reviews come back good.

It was good. Kinda of hard to guage the atmosphere yet as there were less than a dozen people there when I went. It looks like it will be a nice place to hang out though. Sharp decor but not too fancy. The tap list was pretty good. I think there will be something there for almost anyone. The bottle list is even more impressive. According to their FB page they're serving burgers and sandwhiches now. They're slowing rolling uot the full menu.

I had the flat bread pizza. It was good, but not as crisp as I like in the middle. I think they're working on that though. The bar staff was very friendly and I got to meet Quinton, who's posted here and is looking to rejoin the Beer Nut's.

I think the place has real promise, now let's hope the CR croud supports them and others who are trying to step the beer scene.

So far, I think they're only open for dinner, so don't head over too early, Tony. We just had lunch at Jambayz (yum!) and White Star was not open.

We went down on Monday for the "soft" opening. The appetizers we had were great, and the beer was all served in proper glassware, thanks Quinton. I'm looking forward to the full menu.

That said, I do hope they up the beer selection even more. What they have on tap is great, but not up to par with 3B or Red's.
