Raw Wheat

Post by quinton »

Has anyone used the Wheat Berries (raw wheat) from New Pi?

Is there a source for unmalted grains in CR? Health food store or something?

I have never used raw wheat berries in a beer, but have been curious to do so since I first had wheat berry salad. They have an interesting flavor that reminds me of Golden Naked Oats.

The only source for unmalted grains in town that I know of is the health market sections at HyVee. Some are better than others, but most at least carry raw wheat and steel cut oats.

Alternatively, there is a buying club in town that places monthly orders through UNFI (i.e. the place where New Pi Coop buys most of its food). My family routinely purchases bulk flour, oats, etc through the buying club. If you're interested, send me a PM.

I did a buckwheat ale once. I am pretty sure I remember not needing a cereal mash. It's been a long time ago, and I don't have any notes. I think I bought mine at hyvee.
