This is for the voting of the Club Competition. We've chosen 4 beers for which we have pretty solid recipes. The comp will be broken down into two criteria. We will name a winner for closest to the commercial beer, and a second winner will be named for best beer in the style. Please don't vote if you don't plan to enter the contest. Feel free to write in a beer too. We just need to be sure its a beer we are familiar with, and we have a good recipe for. Voting ends May 28.

I am new to the exotic craft brews, so pardon the N00B question.
Is there a place to locally source Surly or Lagunitas brews? They both sound amazing, and would probably be worth a beer inspired road trip, if needed.

To answer your question, no, there isn't. However, those are 2 brews that members regularly bring back from MN, IL, WI, when they go, so most of us are familiar enought with them that we can try to clone it. If you haven't had a Furious, you should. I'm sure someone could hook you up during a trin to MN.

East Dubuque - Vans Liquors and Family Liquors are both excellent sources for these beers. It would be the closest spot for that road trip.

While Family Beer & Liquor will have the Lagunitas, you'll need to go to Minneapolis to get Surly. We should try to organize either a road trip or for someone to pick up some for us to use in the comp. It will need to be around the same time as the comp so it's as fresh as possible.

One issue with the Surly: Will we be able to get the hop blend? Simcoe can be hard to come by.

I was thinking that if we did an IPA, we would have to wait til august/september time for this and have the next harvest. Thoughts?

The hops they harvest this fall won't be very available to us until around October/November. I picked up some simcoe in Des Moines at Beer Crazy about a month ago for a little more than $2/oz. Maybe we could ask Joe if he can get a line on some. Nikobrew has specials once in a while on simcoe. It can be found but will cost more than most.

I think our local Homebrew store said they had some.

Rebel brewer has Simcoe, Amarillo and Ahtanum which is what NB uses in their kits. The first two are not cheap however.

So are we going to start with a base recipe? If so, I found a post that lists the full contents of the NB Furious clone (i.e. including the dry hops). If not, feel free to not click on the links below.

5 oz of Simcoe per entry, times 17 entries (assuming each voter genuinely wants to participate), is just over 5 lbs of Simcoe. Maybe asking Joe to see if he can even locate that amount of Simcoe would be a good feasibility test to doing this comp before the 2012 harvest. If it's not an option, I vote we pick a different beer with easier to source ingredients and postpone the Furious clone comp by 6 months.

I already have my latest batch of Furious in the primary so I don't need any additional hops.

I also have some simcoe and amarillo to share. We do need to figure out a date that works into our schedule. I'm thinking July meeting. Comments? input?
