Club Competition: Cider

Post by carrisr »

The turn in date for our next club competition is the July meeting. That's July 19th. We're doing Cider this time, so if you haven't sampled your batch from last fall now is the time.

Just a reminder, turn-in for the cider comp is this week's meeting. If you can't attend the meeting but still want to enter, you'll need to make arrangements to get it to me before we judge.

I need someone to volunteer to pick up the entries at the meeting as I will be out of town for work.

Lastly, tentative date for the judging is the evening August 1st. I need 2-3 volunteers for judging and stewarding. If you have a cider in the comp you can still be a steward. If you'd like to help but can't make August 1st work please post. That date is not set in stone yet.

We need people to judge the club cider competition. I'd like it to happen in the next week or so. If you'd like to help, please post and what day/time works best for you. In the past we've done these as part of the tech meetings, which normally happen the first Wednesday of the month, which would be this coming Wednesday.

I'm willing to Judge, if space permits, any recommendations on the date?

Well, so far you're the only one who's volunteered, so we need at least 1 more person, preferably two. We can set a date once we know who's involved. I was hoping to do it Wednesday evening, but that won't happen now...

If no one else can do it, I'll volunteer.  But my allowed-out-of-the-house time is a bit limited, since I just spent 5 nights in Vegas.

I'm going to make one final plea for volunteers for the Cider judging. I need at least two, but preferably 3 people to help judge. We need to get this done ASAP or I'll be forced to cancel this comp so we can move on to the Furious clones.

If you are available this week or next please respond and let me know you can help, and when you are available.

Randy, depending on when, where and how many entries you have I might be able to judge sometime soon.

The Cider Comp is done, here's the results:

1st: Lee Paulsen- Sparkling, Dry
2nd: Tony- "Str8" Still, Dry
3rd: John Eikenberry- Petillant, Sweet

Thanks to Tim S. and Dan W. for judging. It was a very close competition and a difficult category to judge. All of the ciders were nice, clean, and lacking significant flaws.

Randy - thanks for the persistence in getting this competition judged. Is the Furious competition judging planned for the September Tech Meeting? It seems like that was the plan once upon a time.

For anyone that is interested, I'll be bringing a keg of the first place cider to the Independence Brew-B-Q this weekend.

Also, we have a lot of apples on the trees this year. I've upgraded the press so we should be able to press juice more quickly than last year. I'll talk to Kim and figure out the details, but I wouldn't be surprised if we have folks out to pick & press at least a month early this year. Since she's selling apples at farmers markets this year, it will probably be a "pick a bushel, get a bushel" deal or something similar.

Yes, that was one option for the Furious comp. It will depend on who is available to Judge and the date. I will be out of town the 5th, which would be the normal evening for the tech meeting. So unless someone wants to take it on, we'll need to do it after the 7th.

I can judge, as I don't have an entry. But, like Randy, I am unavailable that first week in September (4th - 7th).
