Does anyone here know anything about the electrical apprenticeship in Cedar Rapids? I have a couple of years of experience from the Air Force and am looking to get into this program next year. Any advice or anything would help. Thanks!

IIRC there's a $30 non-refundable application fee, you'll need HS and college transcripts (military records too), there's a math/electrical knowledge test and an interview. the interview is the final gatekeeper. you need 95% on it to get in after you've passed your test and produced your records.

What does the interview entail?

sitting at a table with 6 or 7 other guys asking you questions that subtley reference your work ethic, people skills, etc.

Great. I checked out the website and it looks like they are not taking applications until February 4th. So I'll stop by then

I'm scheduled to take the math aptitude test next Tuesday. Is it pretty basic stuff or does it get into advanced algebra?

there's some basic math, some mid-level algebra, and some electricity specific math. it's been a while since i took it, but i passed on what i could remember from HS physics. you may want to brush up on your ohms and watts and volts.

Thanks for the information. Do you work for a contractor in town?

nope, i tried getting into the electricians union but didn't pass the interview. got 93% on it. they told me i'd have to take a mess of college classes or put in 2000hrs as a sparky helper to be able to get in, or wait 2 more years and try again.

Maybe bribery would be a good option for the interview? I would suggest bringing punch and pie!
