NewBo BBQ and brew
NewBo BBQ and brew
Hey, We were supposed to have some info finalized by today. Unfortunately, the newBo People have bigger fish to fry. They're more concerned with saving their building than planning a beerfest. Here's what I know for now. This is pretty much set, but not written in stone. I want t give you guys some time to plan. The contest will be very similar to the ones Wayne used to host. The prizes are as follows: (Again, this might change, but this is what we decided on.)
Judged contest: Medals for 1-3 place, $100 gift certificate to BIY for 1st.
Peoples choice: Medals for 1-3,
$100 gift certificate to the market for 1st
Growler and fill certificate for 2nd
T-shirt for 3rd.
There is a bigger emphasis on the People's choice, but that's the spirit of the market and the fest.
We're looking for some sponsor swag to fill out the prizes.
NewBo also wants to know if we want to set up our bar from 4-8 that night near the stage and serve, this would be simply us pouring. There will be commercial beers as well. Let me know if there's interest and I'll let them know.
if there are any questions, please let me know. Officers, if you want to meet with me, let me know. Wendy's time is pretty tight, so I've been made the point person here.
Here are the rules, this is a very rough draft, but again, this is the gist of it, and we will get entry forms printed and disseminated when the river goes down.

Here is the info on the bbq part
For the BBQ portion, please let any of your friends who are interested know that they can enter the contest-only portion of the BBQ, but we prefer that they also vend. I spoke with my contact at the health department, and basically what is needed to vend is A) a temporary food service license ($35 and lasts 14 days), B) a hand washing station (I have documentation to share on this), and C) prep and cooking must be done on site. If using propane, they'd also need a propane license from the fire marshal.
Also, the contest criteria is at this website:

New in o, fresh off the press
From the contest organizer:
I'd love to get some people registered. I just put up some new tickets on the registration page waving the registration fee for the first 5 people to register for the home brewing competition if you want to pass that along.

Free Beer Entries Still Available
Hey all--
The NewBo event organizer for the BBQ & Homebrew Competition just sent me a note letting me know he is still looking for 2-3 more homebrew entries, which are currently free to be submitted. Check out the info from Kent or visit the site newbobbqandbrew.eventbrite.com.
I told him I'd share with everyone I knew--so if you're looking to get one entered, do it it now while it is free to do so.

If I can get free that day I will think about it. I am a single parent July 17th through July 24th. I am brewing a double IPA late tonight that might be ready. Sure would be young though.
Any idea on who the judges are? I am not looking for names, just an idea of how well versed they are on beer. I have had some bad experiences recently with small contests that have unqualified judges. For example, their beer tasting experience was, "I only drink Miller Lite because it is triple hopped." You have to be f---ing sh---ing me!

Now those are qualified judges. I am still on the fence. All depends on if I get child care for the afternoon. Thanks!PrestonAtNewBoCityMarket wrote:We have two judges finalized, and other tentatively finalized as he is expecting a baby this month and if that goes well, we'll see.
Without giving names:
One is a certified Cicerone
One owns and operates a small brewery here in Iowa
One is in the process of opening a brewery

I registered for the homebrew contest this morning. I have a Double IPA still finishing in primary. It is a new from scratch recipe but it smells great and I have not dry hopped yet. Hopefully it does not taste too young for the contest. It won't have much time to cold condition and carbonate. It will be fresh which can be a plus. In the end I will have used 13.5 oz of hops for a 5 gallon batch. Mmmm...

If you listened to the Jamil Show DIPA episode, I think freshness factor overcomes the youngness factor.
