Entries for our next Club Competition are due that the July 18th meeting. The style for this comp is Saison, BJCP category 16C. At style description can be found here:

Two 12 oz or one 22 oz bottle are required. A label with your name and beer style must be attached to every bottle with a rubber band (no tape please). Bottles and caps must not have any other identifiable markings. You must be a current member of the Cedar Rapids Beer Nuts to participate in this competition.

Also, if you are not entering a beer for this and would like to be a part of the judging, let me know. Beers will hopefully be judged within a couple of weeks of the meeting. We'll need 2-3 people to judge (no experience required), and someone to host is nice too.

Just one entry per contestant or could we bring two as long as they are different? Seems in the past we said one only.

We have allowed two in the past for wide styles such as specialty styles etc. But for styles such as this, one entry per person.

Since saisons are fairly easy to brew and there are so many variations available (with brett, different spice combinations, no spice at all, different saison yeasts etc.) I'm sure members have more than one entry. However, I think limiting to one entry makes sense.
I would however. like to encourage everyone who has more than one saison offering to bring it to the next meeting as well for an informal judging/comparison. I have two (three if my latest finishes) , I see Matt has two and I'm guessing Steve has more than one.

I think one entry is a good idea or who knows how many we will end up with. My two are from one 10 gallon batch but fermented with two different yeasts. The two beers taste very different. If I can make the next meeting, I will bring some of both. My wife leaves for Boundary Waters on the 17th and I am home alone with four kids. Going to make it tough to go to Bricks.

Yes, the style has historically had a lot of variations. But the BJCP style definition, while broader than some styes, is not actually so broad. Many variations such as brett versions or heavily spices ones, do not belong in this style category. Many variations might be better fits for Belgian Specialty for example.

Another thing to keep in mind is that we don't want more than 6 or so beers to judge. So if people enter more than one it can quickly become too much for a small group to judge.

Yes, I'd love to have a another Saison tasting outside of the competition, as I do love the style. Perhaps someone can volunteer to host a get together?

Me have more than one Saison? I'm not sure.. let me look around a little bit and see if ... Yep, it's confirmed, I'm a Saison Junkie. Is there a 12 step program for that?

i'm pretty sure it's actually a 12-pack program.

OK, we need to get set up for the judging this comp. I 2-3 people to judge. I will have a beer in this comp so I can't be a judge. I can help steward if necessary. If someone wants to step up and run the whole show for this one it would be preferred. It's also preferable to do this at someone's house, so if someone can host that would be good too.

Please post here if you can help or host, as well as when you are available.

I will be available Sunday through Wednesday of next week, but not at all the following week. If someone can take the reins on this it can happen when I'm gone.

I am also entering so cannot judge. I can host starting at 8pm any night July 21, 22 or 23. If it is at my place, I can also steward.

I'm a willing judge... I like beer.

Palate is still in development, but its a good way to learn.

Would anyone be available to judge Monday evening? Probably start at 8 as that's best for Matt.

What do we want to use for a "calibration" beer? I have a bottle of Ovila in the fridge that we could use.

I think that a calibration beer for this would be less helpful since most of us have had a lot of saisons. The style is a little wider than many so I don't want people trying to match these to a given beer. Also, we have 9 entries. I may withdraw mine since there are so many unless we can get another judge. Dan, are you still in? With you we've only got two judges.
