you have to shake them to suspend the yeast but then the the yeast sprays all over when you crack the seal. Alas, the miseries of a homebrewer.

I shake, wait a minute, then crack very slowly. I open over the flask (usually making a starter) in case any does get lose. Usually don't make any mess.

I do what Matt does.

I have successfully cracked one 'cold' one open poured a little of the clear liquid out while not disturbing the yeast and then closed it and let it warm up then shake. I found I could avoid the blow out with that. Most of the time I don't worry about it and just try to open it over the flask as well.

I do the same as Matt except I also use a sanitized funnel to minimize spillage.
