Tonight's Brew Is...
A Cincinnati Pale Ale - partial grain and with some corn sugar to up the alcohol content.
This should be very tasty for the second half of the summer.
It should be in the bucket and the kitchen cleaned up by 11:30 PM.
Tomorrow night, I think I'll do a Blonde Ale for the July Meeting's Competition; I am thinking of doing Brew In A Bag All-Grain.

I made 10 gallons and just racked 5 onto strawberries and 5 onto mangos. Will see what happens after a few more weeks. Never done a comp before, so I'm excited to see what others think of my swill.

The Blonde it up next...I am afraid it will not have too much conditioning completed by the submission date; but I will take my chances.
Should be in the fermenter tomorrow.
Mango....that one should be pretty interesting and unique; I think it will be a nice addition.

You can find the basic details about club comps here: http://www.crbeernuts.org/phpBB3/viewto ... f=7&t=2677. Keep in mind that these are judged by the BJCP standards unless otherwise noted. In order to give more meaningful and consistent feedback, as well as to help train judges, beers must fit into the BJCP style guidelines or the scores will likely be much lower. It's OK to enter them anyway, but don't be disappointed by the results you get.

In this example, adding fruit to a Blond Ale is acceptable, but the key here is that those flavors should not dominate or overwhelm the malt flavors which are the key to this style. Fruit beers generally go into the Fruit Beer category.

Also, I'd be happy to talk to anyone about our competitions or BJCP sanctioned comps at the meeting. Further, any club member is welcome to attend our judging sessions as an observer to learn more about how judging works.

Thanks Randy. I hope my fruit isn't overpowering, I stole a piece or three from a few recipes and made it my own. Time will tell, I have thick skin :)

Just because it doesn't fit style doesn't make it a bad beer. We generally brew what we want to drink. A good many commercial beers are "out of style" and would not do well in a BJCP comp. The style guidelines do however list "reference" commercial beers you can use if you want to get an idea of what a beer style is expected to be like. I can't tell you how many beers I've really enjoyed that I had to give a lower score because they just don't fit the style. I usually make comments to that effect on the score sheet.

My worst beer always got drank. Not worried about it being bad beer, just want to follow the rules.

Agreed on the comments. Many tasty beers get entered that are docked points as they are out of style.
