Off Flavor Tech Meeting #1

Post by DrPaulsen »

The first Off-Flavor Tech Meeting will be held on Monday, 10-November at Lion Bridge Brewing. This will be the first of 4 such events and will cover 5 off-flavors : Acetaldahyde, Isoamyl Acetate, Grainy, Ethyl Butyrate, & Caprylic.

If you're planning to attend, please indicate so on the poll below. We have invited some of the Lion Bridge staff and Adam from Bricks and I'd like to make sure we have enough beer.

The club purchased a $250 set of concentrated off-flavor capsules for these Tech Meetings so the event will be restricted to dues-paying members. You're welcome to invite friends, but they must pay dues before attending.

What: Off Flavor Tech Meeting #1
When: 7:00 pm, 10-Nov-2014
Where: Lion Bridge Brewing

Look forward to seeing you in a few weeks,
Lee

If I might make a suggestion. Use Bud light, not Busch light for spiking. I can explain.

The main reason for bud is that it doesn't use corn. The residual DMS can mask certain flavors. We did "grainy" and DMS last week, and it was really lost on Busch Light. Busch has corn, as does miller. Bud light uses rice..... I've never really noticed DMS in Miller light, but, admittedly, when I drink it , i'm usually not evaluating it. just my 2c

Interesting. Would it make more sense to use the standard or premium version? I've never spiked a beer with an off-flavor, but part of me thinks the base beer should have at least a little flavor.

The issue is what contributes to the flavor. Coors Light has acetaldehyde, Busch Light has DMS, High life is grapey. What we're looking for is a clean flavor. I would definitely stick to the lite lager. Miller is probably fine, I'm assuming it is a more premium product than Busch. It is triple hopped, after all.

Good points. I'll try to critically taste both bud & miller side-by-side before making a choice. Hopefully the off-flavor capsules are sufficiently concentrated to make this decision moot.

I would hope so. We used the BJCP kit. THe Siebel kit might be better. Again.... This is just some input. whatever decision you arrive at is fine. I can chip in for a critical tasting of lite lagers if you want some input. (and it would be good for my tasting exam.) Let me know
