NewBo City Market BBQ & Brew July 18th

Post by Steven P »

NewBo City Market BBQ & Brew is July 18 this year 10-4pm (note the shortened hours from last years 10-7) . Home brewers are encouraged to sample a maximum of four brews. Qualified judges will be on hand to judge all home brewers entering the competition portion. We supply sample cups and ice.

This year we are focusing on all Iowa products – so we will only have Iowa Breweries to compliment the home brew and BBQ.

Home brewers can register through Eventbrite - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/newbo-city ... 6738310738

Early bird fee is like $6.27

So is this how it works?
- Pay them to let you pour beer for people who also pay them to taste the beer
- make and bring at least a full keg each of 1 or 2 beers
- bring whatever infrastructure is required to serve
- show up by 10 for setup
- start pouring at 10:30
- judges sample between 11:30-1:30, (if you haven't run out of beer yet 8) )
- one winner will receive prize that might cover the ingredient cost of a keg they served, and bragging rights

I know it's about fun and all, but the engineer in me notices that it sounds like a pretty sweet deal for NewBo... is there a charity receiving proceeds or something?
(That of course led me to look up the 990 financial filings of newBo, which apparently don't exist for 2014 yet, but in 2013 seem to indicate that they run on a lot of donations, and construction companies involved in the refurbishing make a lot more then the newBo employees do: http://www.guidestar.org/FinDocuments/2 ... 87cc-9.pdf )

Yep. That pretty much sums it up. The $6 fee is the asshole hurdle. It weeds out a few I'm sure.

So any update on if they had to cancel this part? He was saying at the meeting that they had really low entry so far, I recall.
