It is a good idea but usually beer shortcuts equal not so great beer. May have to try a sample some time. It is a lot more weight but good beer is worth the work. We packed in a 2.5 Gallon keg of my double IPA last time to Boundary Waters in a soft side Yeti cooler. It was awesome until it was gone before dark on the first day. The best way is plastic and metal growlers. Then you can throw one in each pack. We also use a mesh bag and rocks to chill the beer in the lake. The cold water up north is perfect serving temp for IPA.

My hiking beer shortcut usually ends up tasting a lot like good whiskey.

Yup. Liquor packs lighter than beer. We take both.
