Beer Nuts Family Picnic 2016

Post by daryl »

Marilyn and I would like to invite the CR Beer Nuts Families and Friends to our home for a picnic and for the Club's BBQ Throwdown. This year's throwdown theme is 'ribs'.

The date is Saturday, September 17.

This is pretty low-key event and will involve great company, food, and (of course) beer; and in a family-oriented environment.

Time: Anyone is welcome to arrive after 1 PM; BBQ Competitors need to arrive, with their 'cooked' entry, no later than 4 PM, and we will begin serving at approximately 4:30 PM.

Bring a side dish (salad, dessert, casserole, vegetable plate, etc.) to share.

Below is a map to our farm. You can see that from Cedar Rapids or Marion, going north and intercepting County Home Road (E34) is the simplest way to go.

Arriving via County Home Road
Going east on County Home Road, you will pass through the little village of Whittier. Once you have passed Whittier, turn right on the first blacktop heading South; that is Springville Road (X20) and our driveway will be the first one on the left.

Arriving via HWY 151
If you are familiar with Springville, you can go out HWY 151 and exit at the Springville water tower (you'll see a bank and Casey's from the highway) and work your way along Springville Road to the main road through town (in town X20 is called Broadway) and head north. Once you are clear north of town, our driveway will be the last one on the right, just before you reach the stop sign at County Home Road.

Of course, Marilyn and I will be attending.

We will have a cast iron dutch oven full of Baked Beans to share.

I will be participating in the BBQ Throwdown.

While we really would love to come, I'm estimating the odds as about 10%, because we have a baby due right around that time. We had a great time last year.

Sooo.. i am going to try to talk the wife into coming with the whole crew, but if she says no, I'll be there and bring the two older ones (14, 15). I will warn you if it is the former as there are six of us total. Four of us are intrepid smart asses too, including the later three.

I'll probably opt out of the competition, but I am debating bringing a couple of Korean BBQ dishes. To make this really work though, the meat has to be cooked at the time of eating. Do you have a grill I can use, or should I bring the little tabletop thing I use inside in the winter? (Not as good but works?)

I might get one of those $10 more-or-less disposable charcoal camp grills too if you'd have room for it. That would be tastier..

I make a pretty mean Kalbi (not spicy, beef) and Dakbulgogi (very spicy if I have my way, chicken)... and I figured you guys are sorely in need of some culture and diversity and all.... ;)

Hey Fred, we'll work something out.

I have a gas grill and a regular size Weber; not sure which one I will be using, but one of them will be available for you to use.

Wife and I will try to make it. If we do we might be a little past 430/5 in arriving. Not sure what we'll bring, but I'll let you know as we get closer. Thanks!

My oldest boy has a cross country meet in Ames and probably won't be back until after 5, my youngest boy (who is intellectually disabled) has soccer until 5 PM, and the wife who actually was willing to go, can't because someone has to run the youngest boy to soccer and likely pick up the oldest when he gets back. So it looks like my 11 year old daughter, 14 year old son and I will be there. I will still bring a Korean BBQ dish, it depends on what I can gather up next week.

I'm probably going to be out again. It's the same weekend as one our last dock jumping competitions for the year.

We are one week away from the Picnic.

If you plan on attending, please reply to this post to state:

1) How many, total, will be in your party.
2) The side dish you plan to share.
3) If you plan to make an entry in the BBQ Throw Down...you do not have to reveal what type of ribs your entry will be, but we need a solid head count so we can plan on having enough slots on the serving line AND enough ballots for voting. NOTE: We need to have your entry at the event by or prior to 4 PM. If you are tied up at 4 PM, we are happy to keep your entry in a warm oven and plate it up for you at 4:30 PM - if you want to drop it off earlier.

Winner gets a dozen farm-fresh eggs.

Randy, in all fairness to your dog, I think you need to jump off the dock too.
