Tech Meeting: NE IPA Style Discussion and Tasting

Hello Nuts,

Eric Benda and Josh Jensen (maybe some contribution from me too) are spear-heading a presentation/open discussion on the emerging Northeast IPA beer style. NE IPAs are prevalent in, you guessed it, the Northeast United States. Examples are springing up all over the country now. The style differs from typical IPAs with its less bitter, juicy hop flavors and hazy appearance.

Whether you know nothing of the style at all and want to come learn, or have some experience brewing and insight in to the style you would like to contribute, join us for the evening. The format is currently in the works, but there will likely be a presentation to lead discussion on how to brew the style, what it is, etc... I anticipate a less formal meeting and more of an open discussion format. The way to brew NE IPA has a lot of different techniques out there people use and we would like to discuss what we have tried, things we see, what has worked/not worked. Basically we hope to help people get started with the style that may be interested in it. We will also be pouring examples some of us have brewed and possibly some commercial examples if we can track some down.

Current plan is to hold the meeting at my house on Wednesday, February 1, 7:30 PM. I live on the SE side of Cedar Rapids. Details to get to my house and how to park are available at the following link in Members Only. PM me if you are a member and need access.
http://www.crbeernuts.org/phpBB3/viewto ... f=7&t=2673

It is a little unusual location so please read the details so you can plan accordingly. Limited parking available so car pooling is encouraged. Drop off and pick up later great too. We can get about a dozen cars by the house without too much trouble. If the group interest seems too large we may move locations or limit attendance. Not wanting to go all night so plan to close out the event at a reasonable hour.

Please RSVP here so we can get an idea of group size to see if need to move the event to a commercial location.

I did an experiment similar to the one posted by Andrew. I brewed 10 gallons, split the batch into 2 fermenters, and only difference in process was timing of the dry hop. They were vastly different beers. I was convinced to pitch dry hops during really active fermentation. It was better. Lately I am playing with different yeast strains.

I did something like that recently also, though I didn't control enough of the variables enough for good comparison. It resulted though in 2 great fermentation-hopped bottle conditioned IPAs with US05 and one ok kegged and dry-hopped-in-the-fermenter and-again-in-the-keg IPA (not sugar-carbonated, I guess I should have done so but was in a hurry) with 644.
