Powdered Lactose

I have never used Lactose.

The recipe I have calls for 8 oz....and if that is dry weight, that is half a pound.

Does that seem reasonable?

Yup, that's reasonable. 8 to 16oz lactose is a normal range for a milk stout
I put 8oz in a keg of root beer also, gives a slight rootbeer float flavor.

I use lactose all the time, depending on what kinda beer it is, 8 oz would be just noticeable. Certainly not too much

I typically aim for about 5% of the grain bill to be lactose whenever using it. Usually gives me just what I need.
