AHA Learn to Homebrew Day
Several members demonstrated homebrewing and mead making at NewBo City Market on November 4.
Three homebrew rigs including a three-tier brew tower, a simplified picnic-cooler based three-tier system and a brew-in-a-bag system demonstrated all-grain brewing process. Mead making was also demonstrated. Samples of ingredients were presented.
Samples of homebrew beer and mead were provided for the public to sample.
Public response was steady and several people expressed interest in the hobby.
The response was positive, and we intend to repeat this event next year.
Lion Bridge Wort Rally and Pro-Am Competition
Results from the 2017 judging: 1st - Tony Browning - Down Gose Frazier, 2nd - Josh Peanasky - Scavenger Sour Ale, 3rd - Mark Jensen - The Saison. Congratulations to our winners and thanks to all of those that also entered.
The 2018 wort rally in collaboration with Lion Bridge Brewing will be held earlier in the year, targeting April for turn-in and judging. Detail dates are yet to be determined.
The goal is to make beers eligible for the GABF Pro-Am competition. Note that entrants must be members of the AHA; renew or join now.
The recipe must be able to be produced on the 10-barrel scale at Lion Bridge Brewing. No difficult to source ingredients. No more than one pound of hops per five gallons. May be kettle soured, but otherwise no “bugs.” A list of acceptable yeast strains will be provided at a later date. There will be a technical meeting for the Lion Bridge brewers to review and comment on the recipe for producibility.
A sanctioned competition with certified judges will be required for beers to be eligible to compete in the Pro-Am. We’ll be arranging this as we move forward.
Bunged Competition
The 2018 secret ingredient is “no hops” (I guess that makes it a non-ingredient)
Be thinking about your recipes.
McCusker is already ready for this one….
