Liquidation Rally 2018
Liquidation Rally 2018
Yard Sale is making a return for the Liquidation Rally 2018.
Unfortunately, this year's event will not be a AHA/BJCP-sanctioned event. But, we can still compete amongst ourselves for bragging rights. All entries will be judged, and all entries may be poured at the June Happy Hour to compete for the People's Choice award.
There will be some differences this year.
1)Pricing has changed to allow participants to buy 5 gallons or 10 gallons; fees have increased to absorb the additional expenses we expect to incur with the new resources we are using for registration.
The prices are as follows:
5 gallons/1-entry - $20
5 gallons/1-entry with a Rally-provided bucket - $25
10 gallons/2-entries under the buyer's name - $35
10 gallons/2-entries under the buyer's name, with two Rally-provided buckets - $45
About the wort...
SRM will be about 4.7 pre-boil.
Pre-boil gravity will be greater than 1.058, but less than 1.075; it all depends upon the final run-off volume, which is proportional to the number of entries.
The wort will not contain any hops.
The wort will be held at 190 degrees for 20 mins to pasteurize, cooled, and then moved to the vessels for pickup.
All registrations will be handled through Event Brite. You can register for this event at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/liquidatio ... 4906709176.
Registration cutoff will occur after 60 entries or by COB, Tuesday, April 17, whichever occurs first.
Wort Vessel Drop Off will be Thursday, April 19
Wort Vessel Pick Up will be Friday, April 20

Re: Liquidation Rally 2018
Is there still going to be restrictions on type of yeast/bacteria and amount of hops?

They said that the official winner selection will consider commercial cost and time requirements.MikeB wrote:Is there still going to be restrictions on type of yeast/bacteria and amount of hops?

You can make whatever you want, though.
Re: Liquidation Rally 2018
You can brew and enter whatever you would like.
However, Lion Bridge will select the entry (if any) that is to go on to the GABF Pro Am. And I can pretty much guarantee that anything involving bugs will not be selected for the Pro Am.
Here are some of the guidelines that were conveyed to me:
1) Keep it economical - avoid using very expensive ingredients.
2A) Use ingredients that are readily available to breweries
2B) Avoid exotic, hard to get grains, hops, amendments, spices, etc., which incurs a double whammy because they are usually expensive.
3) Avoid onerous brewing requirements (barrel curing, long-term maturity requirements); Lion Bridge generally implements a single infusion....so while we are out of that consideration, keep it in mind if you are adding specialty grains.
4) Here are some of my notes of some of the guidelines Quinton provided:
- Limit the amount of hops to no more than 1 pound in a 5 gallon batch
- Kettle Sours are OK
I think the best suggestion Quinton provided is to go back and see what has won the GABF in the past; that might provide some insight as to what the judges have been looking for, or seem to be attracted to.
Good luck.

Re: Liquidation Rally 2018
The original post has been updated to reflect that this year's wort rally will not be an AHA/BJCP-sanctioned competition, therefore our entries will not qualify for this year's Pro Am.
I am sorry that I was not able to pull this off in 2018, there simply was not enough time to get all of the pieces aligned to ensure a quality experience for everyone involved.
But I am confident that we now have all of the information and have identified the key resources required to execute an event we can all be proud of....and we'll have fun doing it.
Planning for next year's AHA/BJCP-sanctioned wort rally will start sometime after our beer festival.

Re: Liquidation Rally 2018
Yeah, too bad for that... but there's always next year. Bright side is now we don't have to worry as much about fitting recipes to style, or using certain bugs.daryl wrote:The original post has been updated to reflect that this year's wort rally will not be an AHA/BJCP-sanctioned competition, therefore our entries will not qualify for this year's Pro Am.

So, I went to fill out the Event brite form. It “timed out” on me so I filled it out again. Then I got charged twice. So, I’ve officially paid for 20 gallons. Can I get all 20 gallons?

They are yours! You will be able to submit up to 4 entries, can be in the same category, but you can not duplicate subcategories.Josh_Jensen wrote:So, I went to fill out the Event brite form.
