For those not on the mailing list:

" BeerSmith 3 - A First Look
I’m pleased to announce the upcoming release of BeerSmith 3, which has been in development for almost two years. I’m planning to release the desktop version prior to Homebrewcon (late June). The mobile version 3 for your phone or tablet will follow in late July.

While I’m certain many of you have questions about release date, upgrades, and pricing this post will only take a look at some of the key features. I will follow up this weekend with a detailed feature post and announcement on upgrades, preorder, pricing and the final release date.

Major Highlights
Here are a few of the headline features - I have a more detailed article here if you want to learn more.
  • Support for mead, wine and cider recipe types, including related styles and data
Cloud folders, better cloud sharing options and rating of recipes
Updated look/feel and smart dialogs that are tailored to the task at hand
Water profile tools fully integrated with the recipe builder
Support for individual whirlpool hop temperatures and high altitude brewing
Mash pH acid adjustments fully integrated with the recipe builder
Two stage yeast starters for liquid yeast and dry yeast hydration
A ton of new data - hops, grains, fruits, juices, styles, more all updated
Backwards compatible - imports your data, and can run side by side with V2
You can view screen shots and read more about the features here. I'll be posting additional details on the blog this week on various features along with an explanation of preorder and upgrade options.

Thank you again for your continued support!

This is good news! Beersmith in its current form is about as awkward as Brad Smith’s personality.

Version 2 desktop owners who aren't subscribers to an annual plan will need to upgrade. Right now $25. In the past there have been specials offered by partners, usually close to the holidays, for around $19. But no guarantee on that of course.

From the screenshots it looks about the same, just more features. But I mean it is brew software. I don't expect it to be super flashy and have naked girls in the background.

I’ve been using Brewers Friend, which, at least to me is more user friendly, always updated ingredient selection, and navigates like modern software. Beer Smith looks like something from MS-DOS. But if Brad Smith added some images of naked women, it would certainly help the experience.

got an email from them with pre-ordering options if you have version 2.
o Older BeerSmith 2 Licenses: We are offering a substantial pre-order discount on BeerSmith 3 now. I believe most existing users can find an affordable plan below. I intend to close the pre-order pricing out by the end of June, so act now.

Thanks Tony, I haven't gotten any emails even though I'm a Cloud subscriber etc. Anyway, added on a year + 3.0 upgrade for 10$.

How well does Brewer's Friend do scaling up to pro size batches from a 5 or 10 gallon batches? Beer Smith has a lot of nice features that makes that a breeze even in the old release.

It also makes scaling down easy and adjusts for efficiency. I have to do that a lot.

Features I'm looking forward to in the new version are support for other beverages and better WP hop entry. If the water section works as well as Brun' Water that would be pretty big but time will tell.
