Gluten allergy: A beer lovers Kryptonite.
My mother was a Avid Beer Drinker, until about 2 years ago found she had a severe gluten allergy. She has tried several gluten free products. Using sorghum buckwheat and so forth and I have tried these so-called beers and they are terrible even on a good day. They lack flavor and depth and absolutely no hop flavor or aroma simply just a liquid swill that isn't fit to drink.
I have discussed this with a few people in the club and I remember a couple people telling me of a yeast that actually breaks down gluten molecules. Now obviously if they sell a product like this and advertise it as such it must work. However, I don't want to make something and call it gluten-free for my dear Mother to taste and inadvertently make her severely ill.
So now the question to the group, what is this yeast and is there a lab where a finished product could be sent to be tested to make sure it is indeed gluten free?
Secondly has anybody ever used this yeast
with favorable results toward gluten allergies?

Clarity Ferm. Brulosophy guys have an experiment where they compare clarity ferm to gelatin. Clarity ferm is an expensive clarifier, compared to gelatin, but it cleaves the gluten molecule in half with astounding gluten free results.

Www.GlutenFreeHomebrewing.org has a ton of malted gluten free grains if you want to try the all-grain route. Even have roasted versions for some complexity.
In regards to the Brulosophy experiment, I believe even the "normal" batch came in below the gluten intolerant level. Not sure how low your Mom needs it to be.

Yup, this is the important question. Is she 100% guten alergic, or, intolerant such that a under-the-FDA-threshold amount is ok?jjpeanasky wrote:In regards to the Brulosophy experiment, I believe even the "normal" batch came in below the gluten intolerant level. If the former, you have a much harder road. If the latter, ClarityFerm will let you easily make good stuff that she can drink.

I guess if the worst case scenario is your mom has a couple of beers and she shits her pants. We've all been there, and most of us don't have celiacs disease.

No mark LOL it's more along the hives and rash side of things that last a couple weeks.
She has been trying more things labeled gluten-free such as bread and crackers lately so I think the clarity ferm would be a good place to start. that article was a very good read. It cleared up a lot of questions I had with using it.

We should work this into the Fest marketing. Pure magic!mjensen52402 wrote:I guess if the worst case scenario is your mom has a couple of beers and she shits her pants. We've all been there, and most of us don't have celiacs disease.

Joel and I have been exchanging thoughts on gluten free brewing (GFB); and I have been digging a little deeper into this and have been giving it some thought.
I have a niece that has Celiac Disease, and would like to try some GF beer, so I think I will be giving this a try.
I found this treasure trove of recipes....and have received some guidance on the more popular ones: https://www.glutenfreehomebrewing.org/r ... recipe.php
AND, I think I might try to crank out 1-3 of these brews...and if drinkable, this maybe one more way to set up apart from the other festivals. If we have 2-3 decent GFB's, two ciders, a meadary, and a couple of wine tastings....folks with Glutin Intolerance just might come out an party.
The hard equipment used to pour (glass, stainless), would need to have been either cleaned and the kept separate from regular beers; and soft equipment (poly tubing, silicon, plastics) would need to be devote solely to GFBs.
I think I will be ordering a kit or two very soon.....there is even a lager https://www.glutenfreehomebrewing.org/r ... cipeid=212 - which interests me because the style is so clean...any off flavors are unfortunately showcased. The folks at Gluten Free Home Brewing thought this lager was a really good beer. Their IPA 1758 and Robust Porter kits are the most popular and most highly regarded....IPA and Porter, I could see lending themselves to a GF knock off. And I am interested in those too as well....might start with them first.
Maybe do a Gluten Free version of Bunged....and have a mini GF Beer Fest.....now that would be unique and might attract a special and very appreciative crowd.....but let's see how these first batches turn out. I am keeping a healthy degree of skepticism.
Thoughts? Opinions?

The idea of a festival for gluten-free is interesting. I believe having wines ciders and Meads are a no-brainer for gluten-free. What I would look more into is the legality of serving beer labeled as gluten-free. Having proper paperwork to show that it is and making sure there is no cross-contamination with equipment. It would be bad reputation for somebody saying they got sick at a Homebrew Festival of ours but also depending on their severity of allergy, legal recourse.

I don't see us doing a dedicated gluten free festival. It sucks for people that battle it. Fact is it is a small portion of the population and doubt there would be enough participation on either side to support a dedicated festival in eastern Iowa.
It would be cool to have some gluten free beers at our festival though!

I agree, a dedicated festival might be impractical. An internal comp or tech meeting where GF is produced might make for an interesting happy hour.
Having 2 or 3 GF beers at the festival, along with the cider and mead....and if we could get one or two wineries....that could be enough to bring out a small class of folks that normally would not come.
Not a game changer for us....but would be pretty sweet for those afflicted with conditions that require a GF diet. It would be more of a public service than anything else.
