Grain Buy 2019 - Group/Split Purchases Discussions

Post by daryl »

Until the official Grain Buy 2019 thread is opened with the 2019 Price Guide, let's use this thread to discuss shared purchases.

Assuming we can purchase most anything in the catalog (hazardous materials might be off the table....whatever hazardous might mean), we can talk about what folks would like to purchase together.

I am interested in buy some rice hulls, but a 50 lb bag would be a lifetime supply; let's break it up into five 10 lb bags. Would any of you be interested in buying a bag? Without shipping, 50 lbs was $23.50 last year; so these might cost on the order of $3 a bag. Post here if you are interested in getting 10 lbs.

Also, I think I would like to buy some oak spirals, I'd be willing to split a American Oak ($50 for 6 last year) and French Oak ($50/6 last year)....so I'd take three of each for $50 (plus shipping) and would have 3 of each remaining which would be $25 (plus shipping) for each species ($50 if you take both). Is anyone interested in these? A bag of 6 is good for 59 gallons - I have no clue if or how often they can be reused.

I might be interested in buying into a share of specialty grain (any that I would use for porters, stouts, browns, reds, etc.), so post your interest and we can all see if we can pull of a group buy.

All of these purchases, beyond base malt, are subject to the approval of IBC, and our Cabinet.

I buy lots of rice hulls when I am making cider. I think I still have a 10-gallon container that is at least half full. That's not actually a lot of weight from what I recall.

I bought oak spirals in the past. These are designed for going into wine barrels. The will fit in to a wide mouth better bottle or demijon, but they will not fit into a standard carboy.

Thanks for the detail on the oak spirals Pat....looking at the catalog, they are specified to be 1.5 inches in diameter....which will not fit in a standard carboy.

Looking to split some BESTMalz Red X malt. I'm interested in experimenting with it, but don't need a full 55lb sack.
Looks like I'll be splitting it with Eric B and Chris Z.

Also looking at splitting some Briess Ashburne Mild malt.

If we can finalize the ability to buy the large buckets of PBW, there are enough of us interested in splitting one. If more folks would be interested, we might be able to do 2 of the 50# tubs.

I was planning to buy a full bag. How much do you want? 1/2 bag? or less?

Travis,
If you'd be willing to share some of your bag of white wheat I could use 10-15 lbs. If not no big deal.

Actually Joel and I are splitting it. Might hit up Chris Z, he texted me about splitting some.
