AHA Big Brew 2022

Post by laloeb »

Join the 25th annual Big Brew on May 7, 2021!
Held on the first Saturday in May, Big Brew for National Homebrew Day is an opportunity to fire up the kettle and raise a glass to the greatest hobby there is— homebrewing!
The following link has the two official Big Brew Day recipes: Tha CommUNITY American Lager and Dark Inception Imperial Porter. The club could also go a different route.
https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/ ... can-lager/
https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/ ... al-porter/

I'll be reaching out to Clock House and Thew to see if either is interested in hosting us for the event. Last year we brewed on the lower patio at Clock House, which was great except for the wind tunnel effect. Thew may offer more (or potentially less) shelter. Let me know if you have suggestions here. And also post if you have a portable brewing system and would consider brewing at the Big Brew.

Thew has the spirit to host us, but may not have the facilities to support outdoor brewing.

I think our reasonable choices are Clock House, maybe Iowa Brewing Company, maybe Lion Bridge.

I am working with Girls Pint Out to join us...more on this later.

Hospoda is down to host us for the event. They can provide a source of water and if necessary, electricity. They normally open at 3 pm on Saturdays can open earlier if need be. If we brew with Girls Pint Out, we'd be doing a ~5-gallon partial mash brew to keep it from turning into a long brew day. The call for brewers is still open. I can provide a 9-gallon pot, but I don't have a source of heat or a mash tun to bring.

I'm thinking of bringing down my small Anvil Foundry and brewing something. Depends on how much time we'll have available could probably get an all-grain brew down to around 3 hours or so if I preheat the water and have everything ready to go.

I have a 9-gallon pot (no spigot) and a few 5- and 6-gallon PET carboys that I can bring. No burner, though

What: Big Brew Day
When: Saturday, May 7th, 12:30 - 5:30
Where: Hospoda Patio
Details:
Divesh - burner
Logan - 9 gallon pot and carboy
Randy - Anvil Foundry
The trailer will be there for clean out and organization before festival season.
Recipe - (?) An extract with steeping grains recipe was discussed. Has anyone ordered a kit? Yeast?
We need volunteers for the following.
Grain mill to crush steeping grains.
Bag for steeping grains.
Large heavy duty spoon
Colander
Chiller
2 hoses for chiller
PBW
Star San
Buckets
Refractometer
Please speak up if you can provide any of the above.
I have probably forgotten 10 things we need. Please list them as you think of them.

Is anyone planning on bringing a keg to test out the cold plate rebuild? CO2, keg of line cleaner to flush.

I'll bring Star San, PBW, refractometer, hydrometer, burner (and I'm guessing a propane tank as well).

The Girls Pint out posted on their facebook event page that they are going to brew a Hefe and an Altbier. Does anybody know who is providing the ingredients? If it's us we'll need to buy them quick.

And since I'm always late to everything I'll check with Eric if I can drop off all my stuff at Hospoda on Friday evening.

I just checked with Daryl about the recipe. GPO decided on doing a hefeweizen, but I haven't heard anything about the recipe or if they/we have ingredients.

In addition to the 9 gallon kettle and carboys, I will bring:
Grain mill
Bag for steeping grains, 90% sure I have some muslin bags to bring. Will check tonight.
Large heavy duty spoon
Colander
Chiller, I'll double-check that mine is still good.
1 hose for chiller, I only have one good hose
Star San
Buckets, I can bring 2 or 3
Refractometer

It's going to be a beautiful day to celebrate National Homebrew Day.
Girl's Pint Out has a strong commitment from 10 members, another 10 that are tentative, and another 20 that are interested.
And with the good weather, I am hoping we pick up quite a bit of foot traffic.
We plan to have the Jockey Box Mark Jensen refurbished up and running for a trial run....so if you have a keg to share bring it on down, growlers too if that is what you have.
It will be an impromptu Jimmy Carter Happy Hour!
I hope to see you there.
In the Fridge/On Tap: English Bitter, Schwarzbier, Cream Ale

The Girls Pint Out has selected to brew a Hefeweizen (all Extract) and an Altbier (all Extract and steeping grains, with a bag).
I have the kits and yeast from RiteBrew.
I'll bring a burner, propane, and a turkey fryer for a kettle...we'll have two GPO setups going at once.
I am also bringing two hop spiders, if we want to use them.

Logan is getting the ice and will bring the glasses.

I suggest folks bring their own sample glass/lanyard.

Can someone bring the cups we use for Happy Hour? Maybe pick up some more if we're going to have a crowd.
