Golden Slumbers Sour Ale (Flanders "Blonde" Ale)

Post by wyzzyrdd »

Two versions of the recipe.

The 2016 Recipe was used in 2016 and 2018 to make the beers that were blended for the Golden Slumbers that I have had at the last few festivals.

The 2020 Recipe is what I am using now.

Both were based on the malts I was able to get through the club buy at that time.

Basically equal parts of Pale/Pilsen, Vienna, and Munich with some Caramalt and white sugar.

Thanks for the recipes Pat. One question, do you use any hops in this beer? I don’t see any in your ingredients.

No hops. Who needs them. ;-)

Traditionally, a Flanders Red would use aged hops. You could sort of mimic this by dry hopping after the beer has turned sour.

Ha! Thanks, I kind of thought that was the case.

We are trying to see if we can order Weyermann Pale Ale Malt, Weyermann Vienna, and Weyermann Light Munich through Clock House.

Each of the above grains would give us enough to brew the 60 gallons to fill the barrel, and enough left over to brew three more batches to top the barrel off.

We do not need full bags of Weyermann Dark Munich, or Weyermann Caramunich I.

Pat, please answer the following.
1) Would Briess Dark Munich be an acceptable substitute?
2) Would Best Malz CaraMunich I be an acceptable substitute?
3) Is Blanc Belgian Candi Sugar just white beet sugar? If so we could buy 20# of sugar at Walmart.

Ritebrew does not carry Weyermann.

Divesh is going to Minn over Tgiving weekend. He would be able to pick up the Weyermann grains we do not need full bags of when he picks up Roselair Bugs.

If we can get these packaged up by the Holiday Party, you could take your fixins' home with you that night.

The goal would be to fill the barrel Feb. 4th.
