Moving To Cedar Rapids....

Post by Schlenkerla »

Hello,

My name is John. I am a member of Pella's CSP Brewers and Des Moines IBU Club. I will be moving to Cedar Rapids in later this month. My friend Adam D. recommend your club.

I'm looking to get re-established with a new club. I'll be by myself until the wife gets the house sold. I'd like to know the best beer geek hang-outs that CR has to offer.

I hope to meet up with you people.

Cheers!

John

Welcome!  I'm sure others will chime in, but for me, the best places for beer in town are Third Base Brewery and Blend.

Third Base is a brewpub, and Travis (the brewer) is making some mighty fine beer.  (Or he was.  His boiler died, and it's taking them a while to get their new one up and running.  Travis, if you're reading this, give us an ETA.)  As of last night, he's still got a few good beers on tap.

Blend is a somewhat higher-end restaurant, but they've generally got a Belgian or two on tap.  On Thursdays, the beer is half-price.

I suggest a brewer named brian..that is a good place to get a beer in town and its agood price.

The oly two places I think for beer consumption commercially is third base brewing and the blend Im sure others will chime in. There is no el bait shop.

Hope to see u at the next club meeting.

Welcome!  Come on in to the Pub  (500 Blairs Ferry Rd NE)....shameless plug.....and introduce yourself.  I'll buy you a pint.  Or my boss will anyway.

ETA on boiler.....  should be running today.  Then tomorrow I'll test her out and give everything a nice warm (180 deg) bath.  Then Thursday I'll start brewing nonstop till we're full again.  Brewing schedule isn't a great one since I'm out of everything.

Golden Hawk Wheat
Hefeweisen
Honey "Bock"  (I'm gonna start using quotes with that one)
Flying Aces Pale Ale
Red Rocket Amber
Black Cobra Oatmeal Stout
IPA  ! ! !

Rinse and Repeat.

On tap now....

Flying Aces Pale Ale
Golden Hawk Wheat
Slappy's Smoked Porter
Millstream's Oatmeal Stout.

Thanks to all so far!

I start my new job on 9/21. So I'll have to catch your October meeting.

Meanwhile, I'll have to hit the places you all have recommended! Maybe I'll run into one of you.

Lower Case T - I will take you up on that offer! :D

He is. Not sure what the Clive location is like, but the beer at the CR one has really gone downhill. A small group of us talked with their president, and we didn't come away very impressed.

First off, WELCOME to John. :) Hope to meet up with you soon. If you're in the area, the Club will be pouring beers at the Iowa Festival of Beers in Main Amana on Sunday afternoon.

I second the 3rd Base endorsement. I would add Jaimen (Oriental restaurant on Edgewood/Blairs Ferry corner), to the list of good beer bars. Mainly because they carry Goose Island Matilda on tap and have a decent selection of Belgians in bottles.

Benz Beverage Depot (liquor store downtown) has a good selection of imports/micros. Plus, they do tastings periodically. Check them out @ www.benzbeveragedepot.com.

Hey, the rest of you Hosers have been holding out on the Blend Thursday night deal! Is this a "happy hour" thing or is it all evening while they are open? Cough up the details, bitches!!

First off, welcome! Hope to see you at a meeting soon. September's is on the 17th at the Long Branch. I don't remember for October but it will be posted on the website.

Sorry Tony, thought you knew. Every Thursday at Blend is half price beers all night until close which varies. They usually have St. Bernardus Abt 12 and a Trippel like Delirium Tremens. The big belgians are usually $8 so enjoy at $4 in the proper glass. They also have some other good stuff.

On Tap:
American IPA
Strata Hazy IPA
Dr. Lee Orval
American Strong Ale
Friend of the Devil Belgian Golden Strong
Imperial Stout

I think the CSP club is going, or at least that is what I heard from Adam last. Not sure about the IBU.

I’m out of town kids… let me know what I missed, hope to see you all at the Sh@#$ barn party.

Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to make it there.

The wife is taking the kid to see the parents for the weekend and that will free me up to get a lot of house repairs done w/o all the usual distractions. Have to get the house ready to put on the market.

I think the CSP Brewers are going... I'm guessing my friend Adam will be there.

Thanks for the invite.
