The mash tun is comprised of a 7 gal round rubbermaid cooler, Northern Brewer's bronze cooler valve kit, Phil's False Bottom (for fly sparging), and a stainless steel hose braid (for batch sparging). I started doing all-grain brewing with this tun, used it for about 10 batches, and decided it was time to upgrade to a Sankey mash tun for 10 gallon batches. The tun is great for doing 5 gallon batches with up to 14 pounds of grist (around 1.075). I typically got 80-85% efficiency with it. The Phil's False Bottom will work well with a bit of tinkering, but I generally preferred the braided hose manifold. Here are some links to the sub-components of the mash tun:

The immersion chiller is Northern Brewer's "standard chiller with vinyl tubing leads". It is a 25' coil of 3/8" copper tubing with a garden hose adapter on the input side. More details are here: http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/s ... ubing.html

I'm thinking $55 for the mash tun and $30 for the chiller, or make me an offer.

If you want either/both, I can bring them to the September meeting, or we can arrange something.

Can’t seem to get logged onto the forum as usual, so I’m hijacking this post as well to see if anyone needs a used keg with a cork in it. I’m not looking for any ash for it, its just been sitting in my garage and I haven’t come up with a use for it. Slide me a beer or sumtin and its yours. It’s a older pinlock keg with a hold and bung on the side.

Could be welded, could turn into a firkin etc. Maybe a nice plant pot… or just throw it in front of your motorcycle and push it around the yard. Stand on it if you will and go for a roll. It’s a great keg.

Tom,

I've had good luck finding sankey kegs at Marion Iron. They're typically in pretty rough shape, but with enough soap, sandpaper, bar keeper's friend, and oxiclean, they come out pretty nice. If you follow all the basic rules about working with stainless (e.g. no ferrous-metal wire brushes), you should be fine.

I've purchased 3 of them there in the past few months (1 MLT, 1 HLT, and 1 for a future fermenter), but have seen several more there. You shouldn't have trouble finding one.

The price is pretty variable -- the first was $20, the second was $15, and the third was $30 -- but is still much cheaper than other outlets. Make sure you bring cash. Also, it is helpful to poke your head in the office and ask permission to dig through their stainless pile before heading out there. Otherwise, if you're dressed too nicely, they might think you're from the EPA and kick you out (this actually happened to one of my co-workers).

Another option is if you know anyone working for Fleck or Dale Lee. Sometimes you can buy them before they go to the scrap yard. Try to catch a distributer and talk to them.
