I met a few of you at the Dark Beers tasting at Benz this past week, and I'd like to join and get involved. I'm not brewing (yet) but want learn more about it. Right now I'm interested in learning everything I can about brewing and beer in general. I enjoy trying everything I can get my hands on and improving my palate and being a better judge of beers.
A couple of questions: a) bottles. I've got a couple dozen bottles that I bought out of state so I don't think I can return them locally. Can home brewers use them? Pretty much all 12 oz from a variety of brewers. Rinsed out with labels still on.
b) I'd be willing to host meetings if people are willing to drive out here. I'm east of CR/Marion, about a mile before Fairview on Fariview Rd (County Home Rd). Easy to get to from County Home Rd or Hwy 151. Let me know if interested. I'm going to try and come to the Nov. meeting.

You are fine with most any bottle as long as they are not screw tops. These don't seal very well if you are using a crown capper. So if they have screw tops on the bottles (idenified by thread on the head of bottle) you should discard these.
Another thing to be aware of is that if you are interested in submitting to competition, then you must use a standard 12 oz bottle (depending on strictness of regulation on comp you are entering). Many of the larger breweries, Sam Adams for instance have bottle specially made for them, these are exclude from most compititions because the bottle can be distinguished from others. However, if you are not interested in submission to compitition almost all non-screw top bottles will work.

Hi Randy, I was at Benz, not sure if we spoke as I talked to a few folks about the club, but welcome aboard!
If your interested in brewing, I would definitely hold on to those bottles, sounds like a first batch opportunity. I think many of us keg now, but find when you go to a party or just want to have a few out of the keg, then I wish I bottled again so I find I have more bottles than I’ve ever had lately.
I’m sure the group would be willing to meet at your house, although hosting on a non snowy month would probably be key if your off the beaten path.
Cheers,
