I contacted Templeton Rye and inquired about purchasing a barrel. I thought it would be great idea for us to do a club brew...imperial stout and fill a barrel. Have the club pay for all the supplies and we can use this beer for festivals and club meetings. There is a waiting list and the cost of the barrel right now is $100.00. i would be willing to put my name down if the club would like to purchase a barrel.

Check it out, this is what I pulled from their site.

Reserve a Templeton Rye barrel for purchase

We've received a lot of requests from folks who would like to purchase a used Templeton Rye barrel for their home, office, garden or even their home brewing project. We currently have limited inventory, but more barrels will be available soon. If you would like to reserve a barrel, please fill out the form below. Your name will be placed on a waiting list, and you will be contacted on a first come, first serve basis as barrels become available.

Templeton Rye barrels may be purchased for $100. Once you're contacted about your barrel reservation, you will have 3 days to pay for your barrel(s) via PayPal. If your order is not completed within3 days, we'll move on to the next name on the list. Purchased barrels must be picked up within 14 days of purchase at the Templeton Rye Distillery in Templeton, Iowa.

Also, if you personally want to sign up, here it the link to sign up.

This is a very good idea. Any idea how long the list is?

Another plan could be to contact Jeff Quint at Cedar Ridge. He uses the Templeton barrels to age some of his product, too. We might could get a second-hand one from him. It would be good advertising if we promoted the beer at the festivals as being in one of his kegs.

Very cool. I have been thinking about a Templeton barrel too. Seems like with enough interest, the club could get a barrel and we could all fill it up with some imperial stout. It would be nice to pull some off once in a while for our individual consumption too. Most of the imperial stouts the club members have homebrewed I have liked so I think we can do it. The examples I have had from other clubs have been very good.

Also, I have a metal stand from my huge autoclave many of you have seen that may be about right for a barrel stand. Wheels can be mounted to it. It would be the right height for gravity transfer to kegs. If it did not fit we can make something fairly easily.

I asked them how long the list is but have not received a response yet. I am hoping they actually give preference to those who want to use it as something other then a planter. But we'll see.

I went ahead and put my name down on the list. Might as well get in there now for one, if the club wants it that is fine. At worst they pass me over and give the keg to someone else.

I agree why not, we can make the decision then, which might be six months from now.

I agree. No reason not to put in for one. It's not a firm commitment to purchase so your out nothing.
