Trappist High Gravity substitute

I bought a Wyeast 3787 Trappist High Gravity Activator pack at Benz. I tried a starter and after 12 hours, not a single bubble.
I have a stand by of Belgian Abbey and Belgian Abbey II. I was going to brew a Dubbel. Will one of these two give similar results or should I get another Trappist. (Maybe not from Benz)

I meant to ask if either of these two yeasts (Abbey and Abbey II) impart the same or similar flavors as a Trappist High Grav. not whether they would fail in a starter.

Did the activator pack swell after u smacked it. If its a big beer u might just need more time .. Often they recommend a starter for the starter. I would make sure its warm enough and keep shaking or add more oxygen.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> The trappists high grav. was a no go. The starter was 1.040, well oxygenated with nutrient. And no, the smack pack didn't swell. I did find the date on the pack tho, Jan.2009. Will there be an appreciable difference in flavor attenuation or esters if I use one of the substitude yeasts?

The yeast is only supposed to be effective up to 6 months from the date on the package. If you bought it recently I would go back to Benz and tell them they shouldn't be selling yeast over 6 months old. Especially for $9. Also the further away from that production date the less active the yeast will be. Starter helps take care of that. The older the yeast, the bigger the starter. Jamil's website has a nice starter calculator on it that is pretty easy to use.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> I suspect the yeast was long gone because it was over a year old. Any thoughts on using Belgian Abbey or Belgian Abbey II instead of Trappist High Gravity? I want to know if anyone has brewed a Dubbel with one of these before with good results in flavor close to the style guidelines?

I've used Belgian Abbey II for a Belgian Dubble. It was my first brew, and it turned out very well.
